Wait... there are men that create shoujo manga? Far out!

Y'know, there may be, I don't know, but I was curious and checked a little just to find one........didn't happen. I checked about 30 shoujo titles before getting bored and giving up without finding the *first* male mangaka.....so there isn't one writing anything shoujo that's currently popular or any of the long list of shoujo I've read either.

Actually, I read that back in like, the 80's, men would start out in shoujo manga. One of the ones I saw was called "Silver-haired Arisa", I believe, and was one of the better shoujo manga I've seen. A shame only one chapter's available online; it actually looks pretty interesting. Rather than romance, it's about revenge.

Alright, I did a quick google search about male shoujo authors. Apparently, a long time ago, all the authors were men, all of them. Even Osamu Tezuka wrote in the shoujo genre. Most early shoujo manga featured very little romance—in fact, it seems they even made a point to avoid romance. I think we can agree this concept seems pretty refreshing compared to today's overload of romance. I wish more people would upload stuff from then.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of time frame are you talking about here? I mean I read Glass Mask and it started in 1976.......shoujo romance by a female author.....of course in all fairness, it's "romance" probably doesn't still compare to the "romance" written in today's shoujo

woman are amazing~

agreed in many ways.
well, I couldn't tell right now, because, yes as you said, they're always came up with sensitive plot, smooth drawing, sweet romance pure love, but you'll never always guessed by it, because I already read many manga, who the author I thought was a boy ( because they're too many fanservice, boobs everywhere, too many blood, violation, harassment towards girl) actually is a female, or even a mother (can you imagine it? 0.o)
so, it not always like that, but I agree that most of it has that kind of stereotype.
try read Deadman Wonderland.
you'd never imagine that the author is a pregnant mother.

deadman wonderland has shoujo-y art when you think about it, big ass eyes and thin limbs
my definition of shoujo encompasses josei and some seinen, I was talking more about the art style than straight shoujo I doubt men's shoujo would sell
reminds me of this http://vatoto.com/comic/_/comics/gekkan-shoujo-nozaki-kun-r1880

I just remember that I read this interview recently (in French). And it is said that though he is main known for hentai, he has written scenario for josei and shoujo. So everything is possible :-)

usually if a woman is writting a shounen or seinen manga the MC is usually a dead giveaway if the MC is a timid male character then mostlikely the mangaka is a woman

Edward Elric wasn't that timid. He wasn't willing to kill, but he was anything but timid. And in Deadman Wonderland, while the MC was normal, everyone else was totally messed up. Seriously, after reading that, I expected every nice character in every other manga to be revealed to be twisted and have evil intentions.

Males dominated the field up until the mid 1960's. At that point, there was a boom of female Shoujo authors, starting with a contemporary romance series by Yoshiko Nishitani. I've read about Glass Mask, and it does seem pretty interesting. I like the lack of girls swooning over some hot classmate. xD

Very interesting, thanks for the info. Yeah, Glass Mask is old school, well just plain old too, I mean still going from '76 says a lot. Normally I either get "never heard of it" or "oh yeah, my mom just LOVES that one!!". But yeah, I can't think of many current titles that compare to it's style or content, even the current chapters which are being written today I think reflect the author's background and age.

I personally doubt only female mangaka in whatever genre have a monopoly on creating timid males characters. And however you feel about the MC in Deadman Wonderland, the horrific violence and dark story line isn't what I would think anyone would expect from a female author.

im not saying its a complete staple im just saying alot of female mangakas write timid introverted male character but that doesnt mean all of them do nor is that a bad thing just an obsservation

Fair enough......and it's certainly hard not to see your point when you look at characters like the male mc's from Good Ending and Minamoto-kun Monogatari.

I don't know, Dorohedoro was written by a woman, and I could barely tell. Honestly was surprised it was male when I learned. Never read Deadman's Wonderland before.... need to at some point. The concept of femininity being tucked in a "twisted" type manga is intriguing to me although I'm not quite sure I believe you.

..........yeah, personally *nothing* about DW struck me as feminine, it's freaking brutal. Of course it could be I'm just not that intuitive, but it's one I'd have never guessed was a female mangaka.
