monday time

I dreamt i was going to a war zone. There were four or 5 spots of enemy combatants. They were going to send like 20 of us. Interestingly the place where I was to be sent had a code name "Corazon", heart. I saw people getting their combat gear, readying the troops.

Time to grab some fish oil... a new future is possible

and i can't even begin to fanthom how much fun i'll have monday
WTF is wrong with me...
is there any motivation left within me

I mean, the ol' "death and taxes" quip isn't morbid for nothing. They are not happy-making!

Fish oil isn't... Supposed to be like that? (Like, something like Vitamin D if deficient, yes, but fish oil...?)

But you know what, if it's working it's working :3

Hang in there!

(Not with the job. Feel free to quit that. It's your well-being and sanity I'm rooting for here ~w~)

*hugs*

That parses as oddly melancholic to me. I think I'd be hard-pressed to fully explain why, though.

Maybe something subtle about the tragedy of killing for a heart.

97 well like the Intel ceo andy grove famously said only the paranoid survive (in a jungle, where everyone is always trying to eat you)

the human brain is incapable of processing Big Data that involves maybe more than 50 people but AI can... it'll eventually get there I think, where we can rely on our AI overlords to know the exact exchange rate of country X's currency to country Y's currency in order to achieve world peace

Having said that, I'm not hopeful that AI (or at least that kind of AI) will be there in the next four or five years, maybe four or five decades? And we would need the REAL public cloud, not cloud by public companies, which is really misnomer in itself, ie companies that can raise funds via general public.

I want aliens to come in and take over my personal data tbh

I'm under the vague impression the "only the paranoid survive" quote generally wasn't supposed to be about "law of the jungle", or anything edgy like that, but rather an astute observation that once organizations reach a certain point of success and sense of security, there's a danger they get too comfortable and become reluctant to try new things — in essence, "Don't become IBM", as it were.

98

It's really hard to guess at how fast AI will grow. I think we're maybe starting to maybe eke tantalisingly one tip-toe at a time into the territory where fancy AI can be used to help overcome the challenges posed in developing the hardware and software to run itself. We're not really quite there yet, but we're close enough that things could start snowballing really quickly at some point very soon (...or not, as the case may be).

I'm reminded of something a professor once said, about thier work on the Human Genome Project—the attempt to map the "whole human genome", starting back in the 80's when that was a herculean international task as opposed to something you could do fairly casually like nowadays.

Specifically, about the amount of skepticism the project was getting about halfway through it's projected time and funding — this was a huge decade-long project — and they were only 5% done. And the professor was like, "No, you don't understand. This is going exponentially faster as we go, between techniques and computing power advancements. 5% is halfway done time-wise". Which turned out to be accurate.

Now. This is not the mid-90's. Moore's Law (speaking of Intel CEOs) is a shadow of its former self. But I do wonder if AI isn't like that right now—it's genuinely orders of magnitude better than it was a few years ago, presently. Already so easy to forget that GPT-2 and Dall-E were completely flabbergastingly uncannily good when they were unveiled a handful of years back. Is all this advancement because of some one-off collection of breakthroughs hitting at once? A temporary byproduct of all the money and attention we're pouring into things?

Or are we on an constantly accelerating curve and about to be in for a Really Wild Ride?

99 are you training models on your rig these days? just curious

i'm seeing new papers coming out about how you can easily run a new model on a new rtx 4090 which costs roughly $2K... is not crazy insane expensive, but certainly aint cheap.

We might be at the cusp of a wild ride, or we might be derailed completely and just lose a lot of money doing random shit thats not really worth it

I still don't see how openAI and chatGPT can continue to burn a million dollars a day or so doing this

The only platform thats big enough to handle such a loss would be the government, or the Pentagon and their 800 billion dollar budget a year, and they can just print money now

or not because of inflation... it's hard to know what will happen first, commercialization of AI or budget crisis

It's really quite simple.

A million dollars a day isn't too bad for operating expenses if you've got a few billion to burn. A few billion to burn isn't too much to invest if you're a multi-billionare reading the tea leaves and hoping to own all the production in the world if AI pans out to anywhere in the vicinity of maximum potential.

If you're a bit cynical but the math checks out, easy.

And like, perspective: Musk burned more a hundred times what it costs to run OpenAI for a year, in order to make Twitter into the world's most expensive shitpost. We're at a point of wealth inequality where the most uber of uber-rich have the disposable income of nations.

We might be at the cusp of a wild ride, or we might be derailed completely and just lose a lot of money doing random shit thats not really worth it

Why not both?

They aren't mutually exclusive. We can waste untold billions on shiny toys and useless implementations of things that aren't even remotely viable yet, and still be on the cusp of a revolution. Remember the dot-com crash? How the investments leading up to it were a complete batshit frenzy of stupidity and dumbass billionaires setting money on fire, notwithstanding that the internet did pretty much everything it was promised to in changing the world? (Both the good and the bad)

Not right now. I figured out that I don't know how to do what I want to do and rather than go in blind I'm starting to take online courses (the San Jose Library system has access to some for free, so long as you're capable of waiting around noon Mondays to refresh a certain page to get one of the program slots)

I figure I'll take a shot at figuring out what I'm actually doing XD
