TBH it's become clear to me recently that the term is way too broad and overinclusive, something I'm surprised hasn't been addressed years ago. The idea of a game in which you play a role is so basic as to be applicable in nearly every game.
The term JRPG refers to the style of game commonly found in Japan, in which the narrative is the focus and you generally control a party of several characters who level up as you go along (though you commonly don't control much of their ability growth outside of equipment).
Western RPGs (unsure if WRPG is a term) are known for focusing on control of a single character who you often cause to become more powerful in several different ways, there is generally a storyline but the focus is more on combat and improving your character.
I believe Extra Credit had an episode where they mentioned something along these lines.
My point is- they're both radically different styles of games, to the point that boiling them both down with a single term (RPG) is inconvenient and really doesn't convey much information.
Spread the word and enjoy games!

I'm also confused by the way you swap from talking about the current state of RPGs to suddenly talking about (what you consider) classic JRPGs. Are you complaining about them? Or maybe using them as a comparison for newer games that you didn't name?

There is also other titles like Radiata Stories that are good too, I'm bad with names and lazy to go check..
I bought Star Ocean 3 and somehow ended droping it far into it because it was buggy. I should get Directors cut version...

Haha, I'd neglected to take note of this, it is certainly a sudden and confusing change in the dialogue, isn't it?
I'm personally a bigger fan of the WRPG style than the JRPG, not that I don't enjoy a JRPG occasionally (Enchanted Arms kicked ass). I really like the ability to make my character more powerful and specifically define his growth.
I used to be a fan of the Final Fantasy series but I later realized that FF had a lot of hype and fan-worship to the point that people seem to try to pretend they have no flaws. On the other hand FF Tactics is one of my favorite games ever and FF9 was quite good IMO.

yeah it is pretty interesting xDlol first time I hear about pokemon conquest, just googled it looks good. It's good to know they finally decided to make a second game. Because all the others were slightly better versions of the same thing.
The fact that you conquer kingdoms is awesome

Some of the Final Fantasy games are good, they have a few flaws that people try not to see. Since i just started playing Final Fantasy a while ago, I cant say much.
Valkyria Chronicles and yakuza games are amazing
I don't like some JRPG games, mostly the ones that have horrible graphics or look like an old arcade game.

You mean to say you're biased against games with 8/16/32-bit graphics? Those include some of the classics.
I've played far too many poor quality games that brag solely about excellent graphics (when aesthetics is the real thing to be shooting for, not graphical capability) to fall into the 'games need good graphics' schtick.
