Yaaaaaay! My favorite manga site has just included my favorite comedy manga (notice my avatar). Urusei Yatsura was the fourth manga I read, after Ranma, Ah My Goddess, and What's Michael, and it has remained my favorite Takahashi manga of all time. The comedy is nonstop, the characters are strangely developed (by strangely, I mean that Ataru isn't a 2 dimensional pervert. Oh, he's a pervert, but would face Miyamoto Musashi duel-wielding katanas, rather than allow a girl to be hurt.), the imagination of Takahashi Sensei in writing the plot is incredible and boundless; in short, this is her peerless first major work. This one work defined a whole generation of manga, and if today's youth sees it as dated and corny, I am sorry for their narrow minded view. For me, it remains a monumental work of manga, and the one that allowed all of us to know the genius of Takahashi Rumiko. The characters are well developed, hilarious, in-depth, and the plot is imaginative, original and a total hoot. There are even moments of understated and well-written pathos. It is a must read for anyone who loves manga of any genre, or who wants to understand the history of manga.

Except for thinking that Maison Ikkoku is the best Rumiko work i'm agree with all you say. Urusei is the basis for a whole a genre and have one of most reconhecible cast of characters i ever seen.
Urusei Yatsura is great and is my favorite work of all time too.
