The Hwarangs is a society composed of youths from Shilla, an ancient Korean kingdom that lasted until the 10th century.  The members of the Hwarang society had large influence in many facets of Korea life and played key roles in many arenas, including:  military, art, politics and culture.

Typically membership would include children (both male and female) of the noble and royal classes.  Members were required to train their mind (through Buddhism and Taoism) and body (training typically focused on horsemanship, swordsmanship, archery, javelin and various other ancient techniques) while keeping in mind the Five Commanments for Secular Life:

1. Loyalty to one's lord (sagun ichung; ????; ????; ??? ????)
2. Love and respect your parents and teachers(sachin ihyo; ????; ????; ???? ????)
3. Trust among friends (gyo-u isin; ????; ????; ???? ?? ???)
4. Never retreat in battle (imjeon mutwae; ????; ????; ??? ???? ???? ???)
5. Never take a life without a just cause (salsaeng yutaek; ????; ????; ???? ?? ??? ??? ???)
*The Samguk Yusa also records that Hwarang members learned the Five Cardinal Confucian Virtues, the Six Arts, the Three Scholarly Occupations, and the Six Ways of Government Service (???? ????).
The term Hwarang can refer not only to the individual member but also the Hwarang society as a whole.  It is most often translated as:  "Flower Knights" or "Flower Youths."  Hwa is the character for flower or the act of blooming.  Rang means man.

Commonly, the Hwarang could be considered very similar to the Western Knights (a la King Aurthur and the Knights of the Round Table) except that they only had influence on the political systems, they themselves did not rule or police the realm.

Depending upon the rank of the member they may have initiates or squires (as ye Ol' English would say) called:  Nangdo(s).  Though, unlike the Western Knights of old, a Hwarang could anywhere from 300-4000 Nangdos (a.k.a. trainees) at their service. And approximately 7-12 hwarangs per time.

More information about this society can be found in three historical records:  Samguk Sagi (1145) and Samguk Yusa (ca. 1285), and the partially extant Haedong Goseungjeon (1215).  There is limited information available via www.wikipedia.org but if you have more questions feel free to ask.

It's understandable, don't worry about me. :) Too many series have been started, and it must be hard on the scanlators to keep up with every.
