I only brought up the Pen and Paper game thing becuase I have been working on a P&P RPG based on the Tower genre (SAO, Tower of Druaga, Tower of God, etc) for some time now. Recently, the majority of my ideas have been coming from ToG... thus all the information collecting posts.

Mood minecraft. Have classes. Have tests. No need for massive levels of over complications.

In fact, with redstone and command blocks you can easily make a team based level.

I would love to see a minecraft based on TOG, but it's really not the same thing x)

Hmm, I think ToG deserves slightly better graphics than Minecraft :(

I've done simple 3D modeling before (environments & objects for DS Pokemon games) so something like a coffee cup shouldn't be too different. As for language, mainly C & more recently some C++.

On a different note, I've wanted to try a P&P RPG, but the closest anyone I know is interested in is Warhammer, & ToG.. really doesn't fit the war game genre.

Warhammer is one my friends always tell me about, but not a P&P I've actually played. I'm always talking to the maker of Sanguine Games and I love the stuff they publish. Cardinal is the best current game engine... although I've been itching to try out that new Marvel one.

Holy f*ing sh*t a TOG MMORPG-Such an idea BOGGLES THE MIND!!!

Climbing a tower with the help of friends, with action packed battles and problems such as arguments between the team and traitors? Collecting rare and powerful artifacts? Becoming one of the people who RUNS the games if you get far enough!!!!!  :o

I would not SLEEP but play such a game!

I created an account JUST to respond to this-even though it probably won't happen I'm already pumped for it!!!  TOG MMO FTW!!!  :D

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

I view that if a mmorpg, I believe that it shouldn't be an exact copy of everything in ToG. Instead, use parts from different tower-based games/mangas to make it more original, possibly keeping certain tests, positions, and races in ToG inside the game.  This would allow a larger variety of people to play as well as different styles of game play and strategies to be created, giving it a feeling that it can stand-out from other mmos. However, I'd still prefer a minecraft mod/map because I'm a lazy bastard and I'm addicted to that game right now.

On a quick note,  I've only played a Pen and Paper game twice, it was fun for me and one of my friends, but the rest of my friends got bored of it really fast.  A bit sad too, I hit level 2 in it after a mistake went horribly wrong.

First off: http://sloperama.com/advice.html. We are not going to make an mmorpg. While this is a bit pessemestic, don't respond to this first part if you don't have any college degree or whatnot in a relevant field.

Anyway, ideas:

There should probably be some complicated economics eve-like. Players battle and stuff influence and lands.

Influence would be your ability to influence things. You probably wouldn't spend influence, but you would probably do actions (i.e. own a piece of land) that add up to an influence use value, and you can't be using more influence than you have at any time.

If you die, then not only do you pay severe hospital fines (or suffer serious debuffs), but you lose a lot of your influence. Basically, people make fun of you when you aren't looking, and people don't take you seriously. You basically have to go into hiding for a while, unable to influence anything.

Also, on irregulars (and other people with special gifts): there would have to be serious balancing here. First off, I would prefer it such that such things are rare. Being the chosen one is sort of pointless in an mmo where everyone else is the mmo. Second off, I would suggest adding downsides. I would recommend, for example, that Irregulars, while over time becoming overpowered, suffer from something called permadeath (in addition to that whoever kills the irregular gets additional bounty). Thirdly, I would also suggest letting these things only be available to experienced players, thus further restricting the number of "special" players and making it about more than just luck or getting alternate accounts.

Anyway, I would make the game about multiple player factions fighting among each other over for the tower with diplomacy and intruige on the scale of Eve, while simultaneously about individuals trying to climb the tower and improve oneself, until you finally reach ranker status (and can now go to any floor you desire) (and have more influence to the regulars in addition to becoming a feared legend many, many times powerful than you once were).

I just wanted to explain this which addresses the same vein as nearly every article or website out there that puts down indie developers. For some odd reason they expect us to write everything from scratch the whole game engine meaning the physics engine, the sound engine, and sometimes even the whole graphics pipeline and in the case of an MMO write the networking platform. And on top of this they continue to say we won't be able to achieve anything near a triple A title. If we went this route I would very much agree that unless we were expecting a 10 to 15 year development time that this wouldn't be possible for us and even then it still might not be.

But we aren't starting from scratch and we don't expect to be making the revenue of a triple A title if any at all. There are entire companies whose jobs are to create game engines and we would be stupid not to use them. With the help of Unity or the Unreal engine or even something like Irrlicht, I and pretty much anybody who has learned basic programming and a little modeling practice could make a playable scene with lets say superman flying around a city with the WASD keys in a week. And 6 of those days I would spend on graphics because I suck at making people. So far I've only been able to make a nice red and blue box fly around around really tall boxes that said skyscraper on them lol and that was in one night. Anyway pre-made game engines hugely simplify the process turning what could be just a bunch of code writing into more of a world editing with a GUI process. There are even engines for the back end networking part.

It is entirely feasible to create a single floor of the tower in a year with a small team. This would include any gameplay designs, a hundred players at once and anything you could expect of a large MMO just smaller. And with the background networking setup, we could add floors as we create them and/or as we get new servers in much less time. Though honestly the networking issues will be the most persistent problems and would require a support team to handle any crashes and what not.

Even after all that was said I am not here to guarantee that we will succeed, only that most of the articles written like that serve as more of a way to discourage those that will not be able to stick through the whole process because it will be long and there won't be much to show for it for the majority of the time.

Edited by Pick Me!, 18 April 2013 - 03:16 AM.

So I'm part of group that's still looking for a few more members to create a ToG based MMO!

We're really just looking for people who are good 3D artists (modeling, texturing, etc)

Contact me if you think you're good enough.

We'll pretty much just trust you  :D

Anyways, reskinning an old game is the best bet. I've known many private UO shards with custom mods designed for RP that such a thing would work on for example.
