I believe that the mother Tasha told Aria is just an illusion Varete made. There is nothing impossible for Varete ;p
The nostagia thing reminds me sometimes EVERY mangaka make flashback or dreams ALL SEEMS like THAT >3<

I don't think that Varete is their mother. She was supposed to be dead for a while and also their mother is waiting back home for her son to bring back her daughter.

No, if she really is their mother, the conclusion will come out like this:
(damn it, my house is so hot)
First, when Aria got her power and gone mad, her father was killed and so does Edea. South and West is fighting somewhere else, so when West heard 'bout the incident, she faked her death, BUT, South knew that she just faked her death so South followed West to the house. THAT"S why it was told that WEST AND EDEA DIED THE SAME DAY>>>SO IF WEST STILL ALIVE SO IS EDEA. (did that recall something from your memories?)
Anyway after the match and West really was kill, but her power was the Abyss so she come back from the death, sealed both Tasha and Aria's memories bout her being their mother AND created a fake illusion as their mother. That's why:
1. She know how to deal with Aria cuz she know what will happen when she return home. (the illusion broke? or North found out?)
2. She didn't dispose of Tasha (not just simply let him be like what North said, but enrage him and start to make him stronger)
3. Just read the story again. If she is their mother, that's one of several reason East show Tasha in his dream WHEN HE WAS SMALL and he felt FAMILIAR and WARM next to West.

Edit: When You start reading Vol 10, you will see the real face of Varete: Caring. If you see when she mentioned: That was not her wish, it's a sad face. AND THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT NORTH'S ORDER! I believe that it's Edea last wish or something. If Ryu-kun play a major role in Edea's death, then I found it's more damn interesting:
Twisted way to reach the truth and one new conclusion:
1. It could be like this: All of them, Aria, Tasha, Ryu got raise up by West, since that time witch and human are friends right?
Then somehow Ryu shocked up something and... don't know... Aria went burst? and Aegis appear? That's why both Edea (she is the teacher to both kids) and West got included? And somehow South was involved and she killed West, using her power and Aria too?

the more I re-read I got more conclusion... damn it

Yeah but West is tooooo old for him to be his ex (And she is toooooooo mature for him and don't really know if the author'll make this a harem or not?)

But yeah if you re-read the very first page of vol.1 you can see how old is he when Aria heated up the mood. Not that small but not that big. Somewhere in the middle right? So I believe that's the dream about the last time he saw his mother, before she sealed their memories.
