I don't understand what they are saying about the gun exploding. Was it the strap from his daughters gag that he stuff in there somehow? And why couldn't putting the bullet of odd caliber in backwards or whatever, not work?

The gag wouldn't be enough to stop the bullet and make the gun explode, but the wrong caliber (probably smaller) couldn't be stuck in the barrel. My guess is, he wrapped the "wrong" bullet with the tape used to bind her, so that it would completely block the barrel exit while being solid enough to stop the "right" bullet. But, of course, I could be wrong <.<'

After placing the bullet the other way, he blocked the barrel. The gunpowder did the rest in the chamber... explosively

I don't think most pistol bullets contain anywhere near enough gun powder to tear through the guns metal casing and still have enough kinetic energy to obliterate a whole arm. It's bullets, not missiles or bazooka rounds. I suppose this is like how cars so easily explode with huge force in many movies.

Actually, ive seen it in other places that guns when unproperly used or maintained exploded but in those cases the person only lost a few fingers.
