Old Man's War: Book 3 - The Last Colony by John Scalzi.

I was just as disappointed this time as I was the first time I read it. They introduce a brand new (adapted) technology halfway through the book and then literally nothing comes of it. It helped in the situation they were in, but it should have changed the fate of humanity... and all it was, was a footnote at the end of the story... and it wasn't in the fifth book he wrote, either.

I wonder why the author ignored it.

The Mirror by Richard Skinner

It's a book that contains two novella. Blurb on the backcover says:

In a Venetian convent in 1511, Oliva, a young novice, is about to take the veil. But when she agrees to sit for a renowned portrait painter, he brings with him a provocative manner and a diabolical object: a mirror. And reflections can be dangerous.

Erik Satie - composer, dandy, eccentric - has just died. Told he must take a single memory into the afterlife, he finds himself in limbo, in a community of the deceased, looking back on his fifty-nine years for their most precious moments. How will he choose his own legacy before the silent whiteness descends?

Both stories are very fascinating and the prose is so different. It's almost as if they were written by different people. I think I'm going to translate one of them into Chinese for my final-year project ^^

I finished Star Corps... the first book in the second trilogy (Legacy) by Ian Douglas (aka William Keith).

It's about Marines, transitioning to fill a role in space.

If you like military sci-fi, then this is a good read for you.

Sherlock Holmes: The Complete Novels and Stories Vol.1 & 2 (Bantam Classic)

by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Sherlock Holmes is a consulting private detective, known for a proficiency with observation, forensic science, and logical reasoning that borders on the extraordinary, which he utilizes when investigating cases for a wide variety of clients.

An absolutely must read for those into crime and mystery cases.

The Grace of Kings by Ken Liu:

The first in the Dandelion Dynasty Series. It's essentially WuxiaXWestern FantasyXGame of ThronesXChinese History. It was very good, a refreshing return to fantasy novels and fiction more generally after reading nothing but non-fiction for a while. There is a wealth of characters but they don't overwhelm you or fade into obscurity like in some other epic fantasy novels. The pacing felt somewhat rushed at times though I suppose that's because the plot of the book took place over the span of a few decades and to slow it down would require a second book, which wasn't feasible as I'm pretty sure each book is about a specific generation of the aforementioned dynasty. The biggest issue I had with the book is that loyalty seemed somewhat fluid and liquid for no meaning, two characters in particular all of a sudden become tempted to betray their lord for almost no reason despite having been treated as very important companions by their lord.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes Vol 1. Dawn by Tanaka Yoshitaka:

It was pretty great, an epic sci-fi adventure about a war between the two space faring Human states in the future, somewhat reminiscent of Gundam in the rivalry between the two protagonists of the book. Like The Grace of Kings the pacing felt a little rushed but otherwise I thoroughly enjoyed it, the imagery of the battles is vibrant and it scratched the sci-fi itch I had quite well

Tales from Firozsha Baag by Rohinton Mistry

It's essentially a collection of short stories, not necessarily in chronological order, about the lives of the residents of an apartment complex in Bombay. The characters are very complex and focused around their relationships between others, but are also quite unique in their personalities; and the tales that revolve around these lives contain heavily controversial themes, as well as culturally accurate to the lives of Zoroastrians in India.

It is a great read, whether you're simply looking for good stories, or whether you have other interests that relate to India. I absolutely loved it and really related well with most of the characters created, so hopefully you will as well.

Samantha Watkins 4 (first book)

I will be able to read the last book in one month at the latest and I have to say I want to be over with it. The series is ok overall, but lacking.

I started it waiting for Rebecca Kean next book because I felt it would be similar. It is. but 10 times less interesting.

In any case, I still want to know how it will end, so if you are in your teens, like stories with feminine protagonist in love with Apollo vampire, with sad things(handkerchief needed), beautiful friendships and some wild sex, I think Samantha Watkins is an ok target.

Graduation Day (Schooled in Magic #14)

This series is awesome and I find difficult not recommend this piece of work. I love nearly everything about it and my greatest disapointment so far is that I will have to wait for the next books to be written and released before I can enjoy them. I have little doubt that there will be at least 6 more books and the author working on different series at the same time will make the wait longer.

The audio versions are available the first 10 books and the quality is there. I sometimes find it difficult to believe that only one reader can voice so many characters but they might be using some software to alter their voices.

I wish I could say the same for the Soulwood series which I am currently listening to. Now that is a challenge. I find myself torn between giving it up in spite of finding the book interesting or keeping it up with my comprehension struggle which makes the experience not remotely as entertaining as it is meant to be.

Flame in the Dark (Soulwood #3)

Soulwood was a really fine series.

Currently on The Faerie Prince (Creepy Hollow #2)

The Creepy Hollow series consists on 3 trilogies. With each trilogy, the protagonists of the previous one become side characters and the new protagonists are previously mentioned people. It seems to work well for most of the readers but I guess I will see that myself.
