I've been here since 2012 and an account since 2014 but it was always a really good site
This will probably be my first and last forum post.

I feel really bad for Grumpy, because speaking from experience burning something as heavily used as Bato.to down never ends well.
Ditto. Well... at least I did until the response to people pleading for a chance to buy the site and keep running it was an announcement that the domain only was going to be auctioned. It's not far very afield from "Yeah no, I'd rather sell the leftover clicks to the spammers. Have fun with that idea."
No one wants to make Grumpy continue bearing an impossible self-imposed burden. But it's more complicated when after starting a town on one's own land, while others move in and build the actual homes, a person would rather burn it to the ground than sell the land.

well i guess this is a fitting time to post my first and last post
been reading at this site for 2-3 years but only made an account last year so i can read some of the past updates on certain manga
it was a good, fun, and awesome 2-3 years of reading, thanks Bato.to, to all the staff and members of the site, i say thank you and have a good fortune on your future endeavors
hope something new will replace the site or others will continue the flag after bato.to shuts down.. god bless

But here's the thing: the possible legal issues of the new site will be hopelessly tangled in the old site if the site remains a manga site, and while it's more than possible to provide proof of change of ownership, it's something that he would have to deal with after walking away. It's better for grumpy to let it all go. The manga is being backed up by staff--but the membership list is also going away. And actually, I appreciate that. I don't make accounts on every random site on the Internet; I made one here so I could sometimes comment on Tower of God discussions. But... I want to decide where I have an account, and information - like email - is part of the reason for that.
If the rest of the admins, after talking with grumpy, want to strike out on their own and keep the spirit of Batoto going, that would be beyond fantastic. But I can absolutely understand why he wants that new grouping to sign their own contracts for site name and server(s) and be in their own legal DMCA category.
And actually, since he's letting the site go, he might as well get some money out of it. The people who are likely to pick it up will be trying to monetize the incoming (and possibly ignorant of the change) visitors. And... if they're getting a month worth of monetization (I assume they'd just buy the name and put up stupid or malicious ads), he might as well get something out of it, since "bato.to" was built over seven years of unpaid labor.
The domain name is going back into the available stream, regardless.

The timing of announcing, "Sure, I'll sell the domain" after people raise the point that others are willing to buy the site and keep it running is what I question.
I'm curious, since I don't know enough about coding to be sure: Is it necessary to burn the accumulated work of the scanlators in order to purge people's accounts? Grumpy raised the same issue, but I don't understand how the two would be connected.

Pretty much, and the fact is people get angry if you burn down their homes and business's.
Best case scenario, he gets a few angry letters/emails, worst case he's looking at something that will need him to get the police involved.
