No matter what servers I switch to (at least the options icon is available to try different servers) ch6-7 won't load of https://vatoto.com/comic/_/comics/their-circumstances-sria-r22246. Now all the other chapters work fine and chapters of other comics work fine.  But these won't load.

The  pattern seems to be for some reasons some recently uploaded chapters  will either be broken immediately, or work for a bit then break. The only solution seems to delete the chapters and upload again. But surely this buggy situation can be fixed in a more direct way, maybe even someone can figure out why this is happening and fix it so it doesn't happen again.

I don't know specifically about this example, but I know with the many other times this has happened, the chapters are broken for everyone (or at least most people)

This happens frequently enough that there aught to be a thread specifically for reporting such broken uploads.

The archives for those chapters are corrupted. Either the uploader didn't properly archive the files, or something went wrong during upload. It doesn't have to do with the servers, the reason there are no images is because the Batoto backend couldn't properly extract the files.

I've unapproved the chapters and messaged the uploader about it.

So you are saying none of this occasional issue is a bug on batotos side?

Even if so, what about a thread for reporting it? Or is just PMing the uploader listed the only real way to go?

BTW, I did also report it to them. And was told Batoto was behaving glitchy right now. So just perhaps you are wrong about that and this is a batoto bug that can be squashed.

[...]or something went wrong during upload.[...]

This could be on Batoto's side as well as the uploader's side. I was merely stating that it wasn't an issue with the servers or CDN, but with the upload itself being corrupted. In that case, PMing the uploader (presumably the one with the original archive for upload) asking them to re-upload is the only option, yes.

As for problems arising during uploading, if the uploader continues to have issues, they can always ask for support (via the forums, PMing me, or Discord), where we can narrow down what the problem is to see if it is a problem on Batoto's side or not. If it's a problem on Batoto's side, I always end up forwarding the issue to Grumpy. Most of the time it either ends up being bad archive creation tools, or Flash being stupid.

As for reporting such problems, there's a Quality Assurance subforum which we've recently taken upon ourselves to watch more closely than in the past.

Uploader here. I zipped files again, and tried reuploading both the series mentioned on this thread, and another one I recently uploaded, and both won't upload. Gives me an IOError if I try to upload directly. If it's a remote upload then images are broken. I'm sure it's not an issue on my end. Help I want to upload more today.

If it's a remote upload then images are broken.

Are you just using the mediafire links you have on your site for that? Mediafire doesn't offer direct download links that are necessary for the remote upload (anything where you have to go through a download page with ads, have to pass captcha, or are IP-tied to is not a direct link).

Damn, I didn't know, I never used remote uploads before. I think we found our problem (putting aside the IOErrors), any suggestions for remote uploads?

try sendspace, last time I checked you could "cheat" your way to get a direct link from them:

https://vatoto.com/forums/topic/28275-cannot-add-new-translated-chapter-always-error/#entry1827253

aand a wall of text explanations stuff:

IOError: https://vatoto.com/forums/topic/894-guide-to-uploading-editdeleteerrorsnotes/#entry89145

unless you're getting "not all fields are filled" error, and/or error 524 - then the issue apparently lies somewhere between cloudflare and batoto but according to grumpy it's too hard to pinpoint it (plus cloudflare makes changes to their internal stuff all the time) and realistically it can only be mitigated:

https://vatoto.com/forums/topic/27840-error-524-when-uploading-a-chapter/#entry1818283

BTW, I did also report it to them. And was told Batoto was behaving glitchy right now. So just perhaps you are wrong about that and this is a batoto bug that can be squashed.

there's a whole big subforum for reporting comic issues that is easily accessed by the report button on each comic page:

https://vatoto.com/forums/forum/171-quality-assurance/

some issues have dedicated report threads there but most chapter issues are to be reported separately:

https://vatoto.com/forums/topic/914-guide-brokenduplicate-chapters-reporting-guide/

because there may be different causes to them and it'd be too chaotic to put them all into a single bag (plus for some popular comics you may get multiple reports of the "having the same issue" kind).

unless the archive is missing (= nothing reached the site and it's just a blank entry, like with using wrong remote upload links) or it has a corrupted filename (see the part about fancy characters below), a mod can check the archive that reached the site (only for relatively recent chapters) and do fixing themselves, and some mods do just that. others may prefer to tell the uploader how they can fix something themselves to 1) educate them so they don't make the same mistake again, and 2) let them keep editing rights (so they can change sorting, chapter title, etc. and schedule chapters for deletion without having to make report threads for it; there's no way to change chapter "ownership" and contrib mods don't need it)

So you are saying none of this occasional issue is a bug on batotos side?

IIRC the only major uploading issue currently, that affects some people and according to grumpy can't be fully removed, is some uploaders being told not all mandatory fields in the add chapter page are selected. is solvable by either trying multiple times (or at a different time), or if it fails, by using a remote upload to bypass your computer's involvement. but unless someone uses a wrong link for the remote upload (most free file hostings don't offer direct links nowadays, and I think even google drive was patched this year to prevent people from accessing these), nothing gets to the site and so no broken chapters appear.

the majority of broken uploads happens either because of archive issues or because of connection interruptions. the remote upload misuse only got a rise recently because of the above "select all fields" thing and not everyone being able to tell direct links apart from download pages. I only recall like 3-4 cases where some very old chapter or few weren't working and the comments from that time implied they were once displaying fine (so a weird glitch or something that wiped it from all servers?). Anything recent simply requires the uploader to fix their archive (and/or not to use non-direct download links for the remote upload).

stuff like fancy characters in filenames (many japanese/chinese characters, emoticon symbols, uncommon formatting symbols, a few non-english alphabet letters like the spanish a-derived symbol; if they are put in the archive's name then the whole archive breaks once it reaches the site - happens mostly to non-english scanlations though), wrong filetypes (like pdf or psd files; plus there were a few cases of missing extensions recently because of how macs store filetypes - I wonder if there's been some update to photoshop there that changed the default saving behaviour), uploading wrong archive by mistake, using uncommon compression algorithms (in case of zip files), interrupted upload, the archive or images inside being corrupted (though in case of individual images some browsers may be able to partially display them), etc., etc.;

such issues can be seen right after the upload when one checks if their chapters displays properly so any uploader that does the checking and has some issue but is not sure what may be wrong can ask a mod or report having a problem in the QA subforum.

sometimes such uploads may slip through the mod queue because of misclicks/whatever, or if a contributor (=skipping the queue) doesn't check their stuff.

Is it too much to ask that it tell you in a comics description when this is happening? And is "No chapters" tag meant to be the tag for when this happens every time?

I think that for that the staff would need to be aware of it happening, and most of the time it's just the uploader knowing about it (scheduling chapters for deletion says nothing about the reason). Some leave comments mentioning why they decided to remove stuff, some don't.

No chapters tag means there are no chapters (i.e. confirmation that there aren't any).
