I´ve seen a lot of comments on this topic and even more simply insulting Manabu. Hence the thread.

 

Before anything I would like us to disregard that the manga would find its end if Manabu would chose Megumi right now.

 

Personally I don't think that we can judge Mikawa as of now since we don't know a thing about her and her relations to Manabu or Megumi. We only know that she is a genius that easily manages to do what he fails at and that she is beautiful so as to receive multiple confessions. His friend said that she is "to good for us".

From his point of view Megumi doesn't mind him when she is around him letting her guard down and therefore doesn't see him as a guy. He beliefs that he is to bland of a character and doesn't match her. No he actually even thinks he gets in her way of having fun as one can see in the beach chapter. That they didn't hang out in middle school probably only continues to strengthen his conviction.

Although I don't know why he might assume that he is a match for Mikawa. Maybedue to the same intellectual interests?

One also has to consider that MC fell for Mikawa because she can do everything he can't and and thus is perfect.

Furthermore you can't simply choose with whom you fall in love with. Life is not so easy.

Lastly he is getting more consious of her by the day but he probably thinks he is only lusting for her body. That might eventually bloom into love some day but as of now we can't be sure if he is simply horny or fell in love with our lovely Megumi

There's nowhere in manga said about mc thinks he's a match for mikawa. He admires her intellect and just want to stand on the same /equal ground, that's all. You can even say he sees her as a rival than a potential lover.

Rather, I'm more annoyed with megumi. She likes mc, and yet she has never tried to understand from his point of view, always plestering him with whatever her selfish reasons without any consideration to his situation. Well, she gets better recently, at least, or I would have abandoned this manga just like full metal panic and some other mangas with similarly annoying heroine

I think it is rather obvious Manabu is smitten with Mikawa-san. It doesn't mean that if he gets into Toudai he's sure to get the girl, but on the other hand if he doesn't get into Toudai, then he's sure not to get the girl.

 

All this is fine; they're sixteen, and life doesn't make much sense at that age. Love certainly doesn't.

 

Regarding the OP's question, "why doesn't he choose her?", I'd say it is because he's not smitten with Megumi (although he does see her as a girl, much more than he would like to, actually), but with Mikawa.  Isn't he entitled to like whoever he damn well pleases?  Likewise, she likes him, and is entirely within her right.  They're young; they have their whole lives ahead of them, and can take their time to like whoever they please.

- dunno if the author is able to create a more complex story with more than the 2 chars, but that wasnt his purpose in this case, so it just stays at the tease phase

- his main sight is on that other smart girl

- and most important: he sees Megumi as an annoyance, who is destroying his study attempts and thus  his journey to get the other girl, ironically that is Megumi's purpose anyway. ^^

 

My predictions for the later chapters: there will be a fight about the study attempt interruptions and she cries (and slaps him as usual -.-) and stops being around him. Now he will have time  to realize her missing presence and that he maybe prefers her over the smart girl because hes missing her. I would find it funny, if the smart girl never will have an actual appearance (besides the 1 or 2 panels every 10 chapters ^^).

If there are no fan-service, this manga simply has no history. MC is a book worm that sees ecchi on everything that his "clumsy-ecchi-fanservice-plot" best friend does.

Remove this, nobody will buy it, manga gets canceled, author gets fired, we go to next manga.

It's actually pretty simple.

 

Manabu (thinks he) likes smart, cultured, polite girls. Mikawa is all of these things, Amano is none of these things.

 

Plus he's been around Amano since forever, and for their entire history she's been a silly girl who drags him into doing things he hates. Her getting hot as hell doesn't change that.

 

The manga will inevitably end once he realizes what he really likes.
