I'm not sure if this has been suggested yet, but adding an option in the edit style lists to change the large white border around each manga page would be helpful.  On a larger monitor there generally a large gap between the actual manga page and the webpage style border that is all white.  Over time, it can be quite irritating to the eyes.

Have you tried switching the theme to Blood? It's a black and red theme which should make reading easier on the eyes a bit.

​Why not have a one off fund raiser to pay for someone to properly fix these problems. I'd give $20 on the spot. Batato is too frustrating to use for anything but manga I can't find somewhere else.

Alternatively, you could install Stylish and modify the CSS so that that bit of the page is a different color (best would probably be a shade of grey). I was just offering the easiest method available to change the white to another color.
