So a fisherman drops a wooden fishing rod into a lake

A spirit comes up and asks him if the golden fishing rod is his

He says no

A spirit comes up and asks him if the silver fishing rod is his

He says no

For his honesty, the spirit give both the golden f.r. and the silver f.r.

First time I've ever heard of this story, to be honest, do you imply the ending could be a two-way relationship or something like that?
It could also be they (the girls) fuse together.

That's what I thought after seeing the pond, the Goddess, and the question. I've seen this pop up in some works. .hack, Zelda, and so on.

It's Aesop's fable, "The Honest Woodcutter". In other words, Ancient Greece. Checking the Wiki article, it does seem like some Asian sources claim their version is the original, but it's impossible to know the final truth. Regardless, it's been recorded as one of Aesop's fables for a long time and is thus officially indexed as one.
