Name: Gideon Sorias
Age: 16
Personality: Gideon is a well meaning young man that tries to be kind, but the circumstances of his early adolescence have made him exceptionally wary of getting close to anybody. He socializes well enough, and his trust can be earned, but he doesn't divulge anything about himself until he's certain he can rely on whomever it may be.
History: Gideon was born in Oregon, to a woman named Eliza Sorias. His father was nowhere to be found; one day the man had simply left his pregnant girlfriend flat. Eliza kept the baby, and ever determined she raised him by herself. Until the age of 10, Gideon's life was somewhat normal. Nothing spectacular occurred, no secrets came to light, no problems were had outside of his poor mother working herself to the bone to support them both. Then, one day, a drunk driver robbed Gideon of his mother. Child Services handled his case once the death was resolved, and he was sent off to a seemingly nice set of foster parents in Northern California. What he soon discovered was that it was all an act; the fosters intended to take the money that was supposed to supply him with food and clothes and use it on themselves, sparing only the barest they could for him. He barely got a piece of bread and some water every day, his clothes never lasted with the rate he was growing, and his education was non-existent. And when the foster care system was sent to check on him, he was instructed to go along with the facade- failing to report that this was the best house ever, or trying to take more than his share resulted in beatings. Three years of this went by before the teenaged Gideon had enough. One night he decided to make a break for it, and escaped out the window while the fosters were both in a drunken stupor.
He spent nearly six months on the streets. With nowhere to go, he made do with what he could; bargained labor for bits of food from local businesses, hopped from alley to park bench to bus stop for shelter, and ducking into a particular book store called "Puzzle to the Rest" to read on a regular basis. He read through everything he could reach in the store with an almost insatiable appetite. The owner, a woman named Belle, didn't mind- she was often lonely, and he provided good company. But over time she began to wonder about his home. When she found out his situation, she was horrified, and immediately took him in. She didn't have much, just a small loft over the store, but she was more than willing to give him a cot and a hot meal each night. And so it went for two years, as Gideon's life stabilized. Somewhere in that time, he discovered his talent for magic; as it turned out, Belle was a magic user herself, and through her he learned the bare basics of controlling it and of the existence of a school for people just like him...
