Name: Vaska
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Appearance: Vaska's left cheek, shoulder, chest, and left arm are covered in perforations, from which a ceaseless buzzing emanates. He covers these holes with long strips of cloth wrapped around his body; to hide the ones on his face, he wears a mask around his nose and mouth. He tends to instill in others a sense of revulsion, as the palpitations of insects crawling beneath his sickly white skin are frequent and obtrusive. Vaska has a faint scent of a flowery perfume, beneath which lies an odor of decay and dying flesh. His body is slight, his posture limp, and he is overall lacking in energy.
Personality: Vaska is by all means a nice person. He is considerate and sensitive to the needs of others. He also lives with a harrowing resignation that the needs of others often necessitates he remove himself from their lives. As such, he is a young man lacking in confidence and in backbone, who isn't sure what it means to live for himself. He is a lonely person and jumps awkwardly and uncomfortably into many foreign situations in order to maintain a sense of connection with other people, which is often to no avail. Although self-described as weak willed, there is but one thing he will not give up on: eking out a place for himself in the world, with people who can, through some miracle, look past the conditions of his affliction and not cast him away. He is certain there are people out there capable of doing so, and he will sail every sea in order to find them.
Backstory: Vaska was born on an island in the East Blue known as Feln. By nature, it was a swampy island and its residents were well accustomed to dealing with bog insects and the various diseases they carried. They thrived in this environment, creating a vast catalogue of medical knowledge in order to combat the diseases carried by such insects, and by the other denizens of the swamp. Vaska, too, was a student researching these diseases, and a bright one at that; he dreamed of becoming a first class doctor and of curing diseases like the Red Ache carried by the indigenous insects.
One day on field research, Vaska and another colleague came across a strange fruit. They had never seen a fruit such as this before, which was very strange considering they were in a very well settled area of the bog, and decided to collect it for study. They placed it in their packs and tried their best to forget about it for the time being--there was data to be collected. Later that evening, when returning to the lab, the two took the fruit from their packs and began performing all sorts of tests. One such test involved ingesting a piece of the fruit. An unfortunate round of roshambo later, and Vaska sampled a piece of it.
Horrible convulsions wracked his body as, beneath the skin, something pulsated and writhed, soon bursting from his flesh as a colony of locusts. There was no pain, nor did the locusts proceed to do anything; they simply returned to their nest inside his body. Vaska screamed and his body shook with revulsion and shock. He vomited many times and the other student with him brought their professors in to see what had become of him.
Upon further examination, Vaska's teachers came to understand what had happened to him. The fruit they had found in the bog was not a normal plant, but a Devil Fruit, and Vaska had fallen prey to its horrible curse. The islanders of Feln viewed this a curse of pestilence, as an omen of plague and ruin for their island; they chased him out. Vaska could hardly believe it--all the people he had once loved and called a family, who had in turn loved him and called him their family, cast him aside without a second thought. Only one person, the doctor who had examined him, showed him any kindness in these dire moments, giving him a small pack of supplies and the money to pay for a voyage off the island.
From then on, Vaska has tried his best to hide his condition, but to little effect. He may be capable of hiding the porous holes upon his body, but he is betrayed by his convulsing flesh, by the beating of a thousand wings, and by the scent of decay. He has most recently arrived in Port Razule, ambling along aimlessly, searching for purpose. Though distant and tainted with betrayal, he still holds some level of passion for medicine--perhaps some nascent crew in need of a doctor should overlook the insects and take him along with them?
Abilities
- Tsu Tsu no Mi: A Devil Fruit which transformed Vaska's body into a hive. From this he has gained the ability to create insect-like creatures that live in symbiosis with his strange body, providing him with protection against disease and the various dangers the world has to offer in exchange for food and shelter. Vaska must eat nearly twice as much as someone his size in order to sate the insects. They respond to his will and follow his commands to the best of their meager ability.
- Student of Medicine: Vaska has a textbook knowledge of medicine and, though slightly lacking in its practical application, is very talented with research and diagnosis. He is capable of administering first aid and providing long term care.
Inventory:
- Equipment: A mask around the lower part of his face to hide the entrances.
- Others: Various surgical implements and other medical accoutrements, neatly filed away in a medical bag slung around his shoulder.
