A Rude Awakening

A flowing darkness surrounds all. Pitch black unlike any other and impenetrable by anything that is or could be. There was no light, no sound, no motion. Nothing. There was only that transcendent void, endlessly expanding in all directions. And yet, rather than disturbing, this eerie ocean of nothingness was calming. Like the feeling a child has when closing its eyes to sleep. Like the fading world at the end of a play. The darkness is embraced with open arms and hearts, taken in like air and water as the warmth it brings is recognized.

Light pierces the dark. A lance stabbed upwards from the kingdom below, with the light pervading into this space of tranquil knowledge. The darkness is burned away, twisted and consumed by the all-consuming light. Fear strikes, as just moments after embracing the blackness, it is forcibly torn away. The warmth is replaced by a searing pain. Born from the interplay of shadow and light, figures take form, but they cannot possibly be acknowledged. No, the only site of importance is this light, this damnable brightness that takes away everything.

It eventually cools down and the scars left from it throb in the recesses of existence as their cause recedes. The light returns, but this time, it does not crush the darkness; this time it merely illuminates what was present. Eyes cracking open for the first time. Formless figures who steadily take shape as the light is adjusted to, beings that aren't recognized but still feel familiar.

A single word takes form in the mind, not spoken in a language but in something more primal, something that appeals to the deepest part of existence as information in a language that was never learned streams into the soul.

"Goblin."

And before the crowd of these now-awakening bodies stands a lone figure, looking out over them, watching them with a tired eye.

"Come now, we've wasted enough time already. No sense in wasting any more. Wake up!"

Patch

Patch was asleep. But now he was not. Patch realized this at about the same time he realized his stomach was grumbling as much as his mouth noises. He slapped a hand around on the cave floor, reaching out for anything nearby. He grabbed something. Good. He bit into it. Bad. Something was wrong with this food because it hurt his teeth. What was it? He looked carefully. Studies revealed that the thing he had been unsuccessful in eating was, in matter of fact, wall. He felt pretty sure he'd eaten wall before though, and it wasn't tooth hurt-y last time. He growled at the wall in his hands. It was a real puzzle. But he knew he didn't like wall. Wall was not his friend. He jumped up to his feet and threw the bit of wall at the bigger bits of wall. You know, the walls. And grinned in satisfaction.

But his satisfied moment of triumph against the wall menace was short lived. Because the very unsatisfying feeling of hunger reminded him of how much food he didn't have. And it was a lot. Because he didn't have any at all. That meant that, when you think about all the food out there, in the entire cave, all of that food wasn't his. That seemed unfair to Patch. He very much wanted all of that food. And yet he didn't have it yet. It was his second big puzzle of the day.

After a moment of... Well, not thinking per say, but sort of... feeling for an answer. Patch figured out what must be done. The food wasn't here, it was there, at least he assumed so. So the solution was easy, he'd go there and get the food. It was a solid plan. He had started walking towards the mouth of the cave before he fully realized why. It was because he'd never been to that part of the cave before. The light part. The windy part. Big Goblin said it wasn't for little goblins yet. Patch hadn't cared before. He was fine to stay. But Patch didn't care about staying now. Patch was hungry and there was no food in the place for little goblins. And maybe Patch was a big goblin now.

Mumbling some things about 'big eats' and 'bad walls' Patch made his way unknowingly towards the outside world.

Mu

Light pierces the dark, making a space for itself to exist and then devour the darkness. Not that the person in question could think of such abstract concepts, Mu had woken up after the call of the elderly goblin with mouthful of drool which she then poured on the ground before hearing the clunking of wall thrown by another angry looking goblin and laughing stupidly at it.

A loud grumble of her stomach reminded her of her own hunger. She had looked at the promising goblin who seemed as hungry as her if not more. So she slowly got up and followed a few steps behind him.

"Mu follow you!!"

she shouted to let her intent be clear as she tried to catch up to the goblin standing at the edge of the cave. Was this the beginnings of a new team? No one knows, maybe they would survive long enough to become legends or be lost in the mists of time like everybody else.

Jin

Annoying, was what Jin would think upon being woken up by the old ugly thing, if he knew of the word. If it was up to him he'd probably sit there and glare at the thing as if he was trying to make a point or something but then his stomach rumbled and realized he didn't care about the old ugly thing anymore. He was then brought to the attention of a dumb goblin being dumb. After seeing that the cave was completely empty aside from the dumb ugly thing along with another one that was equally ugly and probably also dumb, and the fact they were heading out, he might as well follow.

Not bothering asking, he just simply followed them and invited himself as if it's natural.

Update - Patch, Jin, and Mu

The elderly goblin that had watched over the three fledglings felt disrespected as he was completely ignored. It may have only been a few days and despite his brittle bones and aching joints, he was the one who took care of them when they were at their most vulnerable. He was technically the patriarch and acting leader of their “tribe”, but he wasn’t thanked or acknowledged, and honestly, he just felt left out. He was lonely, probably senile and too old to chase after them though. So what was a decrepit golbin to do? Simple. He was going to bad mouth them. And since there was no one with him, he went on rambling to himself as he made his way towards the inner recesses of their cave.

Thrill-seeking and adventurous? Or just ignorant and oblivious of the dangers around them? Maybe they were just starving? Its kind of hard to tell, but it was probably a combination of everything I just mentioned. Mostly driven by their instincts, the Patch, Mu and Jin began to explore the outside world in hopes of discovering new, wondrous, and more importantly, edible things.

Right outside their cavern was a sand-filled shore with granite rock formations of various sizes scattered all around. The scent of sea breeze filled the air and the sound of crashing waves echoed throughout the area. It was obvious that the little goblin’s senses were overwhelmed by the environment they were in, but this wasn’t enough to hinder them from searching for whatever it was they were searching for.

Patch was suddenly put to a halt, which made the other two who were following him stop as well. What made them stop? Apparently, in front of them was a raft of some sort that had just came back from the sea. In it, was what they assumed to be a goblin who was as old as the one they met back at their cave. The only difference was it was definitely taller than them, had clothes, wasn’t as ugly, had hair, and did not have green skin. When they become smart enough, the goblins would realize that what was in front of them was Human. And from the look on its face, it was either bothered or unhappy.

Patch

The outside world was incredible. The sights and smells and sounds all hitting Patch's sensitive senses in full force. He'd never been to a place like this. And the roof was waaay up there.  Patch tried throwing a stone at it but missed. That's how high it was. So high it made the mighty Patch miss. Patch had a lot of respect for how high up it was. He walked purposefully along the sand, which he tasted, keeping a very keen eye on anything that there was to keep an eye on.

The waves were fun. He kicked them and threw water everywhere for a while. He ate some green stuff that was washed up in the shallow waters. That stuff wasn't too bad. It was fantastic out here. So many new things to eat and smell and look at really intensely. He assumed the other two were having as much fun as him. They were still coming with him after all.  He told them his name was called Patch at one point. He told them he was hungry at more than one point. He didn't know if they were friends or not. But he liked them better than Wall.

Having decided he liked the wet sand better, Patch moved on from tasting the slimy green plant thing and headed along the shore-line, sticking to the places that waves often touched. It was because of this genius move of his that he managed to come across something new. Something curious. Something... There was a monster on a stick bed! He couldn't contain his excitement. Patch had done it! He had found food! After making a mental note of the comfortable looking stick-bed, so as to make one for himself later, Patch turned to the pair of other goblins and grinned. "Food!" He exclaimed quietly but with undisguised glee, a wide smile upon his face. He turned around excitedly planning to creep over to the monster and give it a poke. Sadly things didn't quite go to plan when Patch got a over-excited about the food. He yelled at the top of his lungs and rushed in for an attack. "Foooooooood!"

Mu

Outside was terrific! so much to do and so much to taste. From the wet sand to the black wall that formed a mound near the cave. Mu didn't know anything better though, so she stuffed her maw with two sizeable pieces, hoping the excess drool would somehow soften the hard wall and give a good fill.

Her decision of following Patch was genius though, simply because Patch was genius himself. He found the green plant that floated near the shore and then he found an even greater thing. A monster, larger than the green foul-mouthed grandpa in the cave and looking delicious. He turned towards the her and the other Goblin who seemed to have the similar idea as them and had followed them.

But their hungry stomachs were too much to make them stop to make some decent strategy as Patch rushed in shouting atop his lungs. Mu spit the larger wall still in her mouth and felt its weight. As if guided by instinct she grasped the stone out of mid air as she winded up herself and let loose a throw, uncannily putting her whole body weight into the throw as if she had trained to that till this day which was surprising since she was only a day old. Her follow through made her fall face first into the sand as the stone flew towards the new prey.

Jin

As Jin stood there scratching his ass as he watched the other two being dumb, he couldn't help but think how dumb they were. Just as he was standing there and acknowledging their dumbness, a small weird pinchy thing came scurrying by. It walked all weird so it lead Jin to believe that it too was dumb. Almost as if it knew what he was thinking, the pinchy thing pinched him with it's sharp pinchy things as it made a break for it. Glaring at it as his anger rose, Jin internally declared war on the small pinchy thing as he chased after it across the sand while swinging his fists.

He eventually found a rock and managed to catch up to it, pouncing on it and smashing it with the rock over and over like a dumb possessed mad-goblin. As it stopped moving and its remains spraying all over, he stood over it with a triumphant grin. And then like a true victor, he ate the loser....or at least what remained after smashing it relentlessly with a rock. Aside from the pinchy things scratching his throat and such, it wasn't bad but it wasn't filling in the least. Grunting in disappointment, he moved on, catching back up with the other two, having fallen behind due to his little 'episode' there.

However, soon after catching up, they were quickly brought to a stop. Well, Patch stopped so they stopped as well. I front of them was a weird monster that kind of like the loud ugly thing back in the cave not....green. Jin stared at the thing in a way as if saying 'What a freak...' It was then and there Patch turned around grinning and proclaiming it food. Looking at it, it didn't seem like it would be all that tasty, but his stomach was growling quite loud and he wanted the thing to shut up already so he shrugged and decided to go along with the 2 dumb goblins.

With that Patch charged in and yelled like the dumb goblin he is and the other one threw a rock and fell like the dumb thing she was as well. Jin decided to charge in himself. Armed with a bloody rock in one hand and some of the slimy green things patch tried to eat before, having been curious about it, he followed patch. Throwing the slimy green thing at the old monster, he readied to smash the rock into the things head.

Update - Patch, Jin, and Mu

Although surpassing his daily catch by over two baskets, the aged fisherman had no choice but to head back. The waves had started to become unruly and staying any longer might risk him losing everything he had just caught for the day. His ship had only accidentally drifted to these waters while he fell asleep earlier that day. The area was notorious for being home to dangerous creatures, but despite knowing, he still wanted to make the most out the opportunity to fish in an area where he had no one to compete with. Sadly, it seemed he wasn’t as lucky as he though.

With a heavy heart and a sigh, he had finally reached the seashore. Before he could head back home, the waves needed to calm down. But from the look of it, that wasn’t going to happen anytime soon. He had to be patient; since his expertise lied in fishing, this sort of trait was expected of him. Looking around, he couldn’t help but appreciate the scenery that surrounded him.

“If only I was younger.” thought the fisherman as he chuckled. As a youth, he wouldn’t have allowed himself to remain idle in such a place. There were definitely thing to see and discover. An oddity or something extraordinary was probably just around the corner. Alas, his age has gotten the best of him. The only thing he could do now was merely admire his haul for the day.

”Let’s see brats beat this.” Someone as old as him was getting this much in just a few hours after setting sail? No one would believe it. He arrogantly laughed out loud at the thought; apparently, he was a cocky old man.

Patch and Mu were overwhelmed by their surroundings, but once they saw the first thing they could actually sink their teeth in, their instincts immediately took over.

"Foooooooood!" Like a ravenous hunter with his eyes locked unto his prey, Patch charged towards the unsuspecting human. Well, he was prior to Patch’s yell which allowed him to notice the goblin that was heading straight at him.

“What the hell?!” shocked and startled, the old man stood up in a panic. “Goblins aren’t supposed to be here!”. Throughout his life, he has never heard of goblins leaving so close to the sea. They’re usually found deep inside forests or hidden in mountains. He didn’t have the luxury to ponder on such thoughts though; what he needed to do now was to not get eaten. If it was just one of them, he was confident enough to try and fight back. He was no pushover, but he saw three. When in groups, famished goblins were considered a threat even to the most experienced adventurer. The odds were against him and experience told him that it was time to run away.

Not even thinking twice about leaving everything he had behind, he hurriedly got out of his raft, but him being too flustered caused him to trip, landing face first in the sand. As he was trying to get up, a huge rock had landed on his leg.  Mu’s aim was spot on.

“Gaaahhh! Damn it!” He cried out and grabbed his injured leg, but he knew that he had to endure this for now. If he succumbed to the pain, it was as if he was forfeiting his life to the goblins attacking him. Gritting his teeth, he stood and began to run. Technically, it was more of limping at this point. Who was he kidding? He was definitely a goner and he was well aware of this; he just chose not to believe it.

We wouldn't give up without a fight though. Pulling out a knife - that he usually used for scaling and gutting - he readied himself. Despite having the numbers advantage, they were scrawny and short; overpowering them may have been plausible even with his age. The first goblin that had charged towards him was predictable; the moment it leaped into the air, landing a kick to its torso was easy. Patch got the air knocked out of him as he came crashing into the human's foot. He was launched a few feet backwards and fell hard on the sandy floor. Seeing Patch being fend off didn't affect Jin's resolve though. He had a rock, some algea, and a plan.

As soon as the old man got back on his feet, a handful of sea moss had hit his face. With his vision impaired and given the situation he was in, it was only natural that he would get agitated. Blindly swinging his knife while trying to remove the algea had caused him to stubble yet again, but inadvertently, he had nicked Jin's rock-wielding arm. The young goblin's instincts instantly took over the moment steel met flesh. This was a first for Jin; aside from the pain, he saw himself bleeding. Was he going to shrug this off or will this injury cause even more damage than it actually has?

Mu

Mu was a good shot or atleast she would have thought so if she cared for such achievements. Getting back up with a face full of sand, she grabbed the next big stone she saw on the shore and ran after Jin. Drool trailing of from her open maw as she made strange gargling noises. She had decided to change her plan.

It seemed that she wasn't good from distance, so she'd close the gap between her food and herself and as soon as Jin would be out of her view she'll let loose another piece of wall on the not green tall goblin. As the cut on his arm made Jin taken aback for a moment, she took aim at the goblin covered with green plant. Trying to smash its face with her throw this time. Maybe she'll be successful.

Jin

Mu's, the dumb and ugly goblin girl, attack was spot on as the monster reeled in pain. Patch, however, failed like the dumb goblin he was as he was sent flying after getting hit by the monsters foot. "Hmph." he grunted as he continued his own charge. The monster had pulled out a pointy stabby thing but Jin thought nothing of it as he had his rock, and that was clearly better, right? He moved in close and through the green slimy things into the monsters face as the monster gone crazy. Seeing his plan(?) going well, he moved in with his rock, unaware of the monsters wild blind swinging with his knife, and had his rock-wielding arm cut.

Surprised for a moment at the sudden attack, this feeling quickly turned into anger. Letting out a Battle Cry, he shifted the rock into his other hand, he hurled the rock at the monsters elbow and lunged after the monsters knife-wielding hand, baring his teeth with intent to bite into it's arm.

Patch

Patch was on the floor.

Patch did not like this.

This made Patch angry.

This tall thin monster had dared to kick him in the chest. Him! Patch! That was not the way things worked around here. The monster is the food and Patch should get to eat it! Patch got back to his feet. Calm behind an angry face. In the moment it took him to stand upright he knew what had happened. He'd let his guard down hadn't he? He'd been stupid. He got kicked for running in shouting. It was a learning experience for little Patch. Next time he'd be quiet. Quiet and deadly. For now though, it was breakfast time. And the food was trying to fight back.

Patch saw the other two making their move and joined them. The one with hair threw some wall. Wall and Goblin working together? Patch had never heard of such a thing. It was disgusting. The one without hair was trying to hit the monster with a bit of wall too! Patch had half a mind to make them be food instead of the tall thing. Working with WALLS?! This wasn't the time to deal with it. But one day. One day he would throw their walls into a big hole. And then he'd be the one laughing. He puffed an angry puff of air through his nostrils and charged into the fray. His hand with it's hard sharp nails coming up to claw at the side of the tall monster.

Update - Patch, Jin, and Mu

“Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!”

The elderly fisherman was left helpless and all he could do now was simply swing his knife around to fend off the three goblins that were attacking him. Running away was now close to impossible given his injured leg. The best option he had now was to cripple at least one or two of them before attempting to escape.

“Come at me you ugly green pests!”

It was do or die and the old man had no plans of croaking just yet. His knife was continuously swung as he attempted to rid his eyes of the algea that was obstructing his sight. Luck was not on his side though. As soon as he regained his vision, a rock had crashed right into his face, leaving him with a bloody and broken nose. Mu’s aim was definitely true. He was two for two; somewhere out there, an Elven Archer named Legolas must have been proud.

The human’s legs cradled from the pain, but he didn’t allow himself to fall; he had to fight through it. However, it was a difficult task. Another rock came flying at him, but merely grazed his arm. On the other hand, the fangs and claws that came after were a different story. Sinking into his flesh, he was left no choice but to drop his weapon as he tried to rid his arm of the goblin that was biting unto it and at the same time, distance himself from the other who kept clawing at him. None of his efforts were successful as fangs and claws just continued to tear through his body.

“Aarrrghgh! Blasted beasts!”

The goblins were relentless and the amount of blood he had loss continued to rise. His body had weakened, his skin turned pale and cold, and his consciousness slowly faded.

“Not like this….”

Now, he was nothing more than a lifeless corpse.

A ray of light touches Rei's sleeping face. The warmth of which had indicated that it was not really the early portion of the morning. Nevertheless, Rei felt that she had not had her fair share of sleep, and therefore moved her palm to cover her eyes from the intrusive light. Yet her attempt was in vain, for the sunlight is not the only thing that is standing between her and her sweet, sweet slumber.

"How much longer do you want to waste your time sleeping, young one?" a rather motherly voice entered Rei's ears, just moments before a forceful, yet not excessively so, hand chop landed on square in the middle of her forehead. "All your siblings are already up and about, yet here you are; taking your sweet time doing nothing," the voice continued.

Forcing herself to rise into a sitting pose, Rei responded to the elderly.. green thing, with a rather sleepy tone.

"Who are you?" she asked as she rubbed her eyes lazily. "Who am I?"

Update – Rei

"Who are you?" Rei asked as she rubbed her eyes lazily. "Who am I?"

Instead of an answer, she received another blow to the head, but instead of a hand, it was a cane.

“Maybe that will wake you up.” Said the elderly goblin he sat down on a stump-like rock formation in front of Rei.

“You young ones these days are certainly disrespectful. Just because you’re special doesn’t make you privileged! Is that how you speak to a patriarch?!”

He continued to grumble to himself before answering the young golbin’s second question. “Can’t you even remember your own name? You’re Rei!”

Extending his cane forward, he reached out to Rei and started poking his thick skull. It was his turn to ask the questions.

“So, you plan to sit here the whole day? Wanna starve? I’d suggest you become productive and get going; no one is going to look after you here.”

"Rei.." the young goblin repeated the patriarch's words. "So I am.. Rei?" she demanded, seemingly oblivious to the painful swelling that's starting to form on her forehead.

“So, you plan to sit here the whole day? Wanna starve? I’d suggest you become productive and get going; no one is going to look after you here.” the patriarch replied. What's a patriarch though? Words are confusing for the young Rei.

Despite her confusion and many other feelings, however, hunger prevails. Therefore, Rei decided to save whatever curiosity she had for later, and ventured off the cave in search of food.

Update - Rei

The elderly goblin had nothing but ill thoughts for Rei. She simply repeatedly said her name whilst having a blank and confused look on her face.

“These are supposed to be the chosen ones?” Feelings of doubt and disbelief filled the patriarch. From all the goblins he’s seen so more, none were deemed promising. Too make things worst, Without a word, Rei had just left the cave, leaving the irritated old goblin alone yet again.

Her decision to explore the outside world in search for food appeared to be the correct decision given how hungry she was. Usually, one would be left speechless and captivated by the beautiful seaside scenery that was just outside their cave. Rei didn’t have that luxury though. Right in front of her, appeared an Azure Crab. It remained still and was just staring at her.

What was a young goblin to do?

Mu

Mu was certainly happy in her somewhat short existence. Her aim was rather good up close as she had expected. Smashing the old not green goblin right in the face before Patch hurried up and finished him. Rather both Jin and Patch bit into him like ferocious animals. The strange beast spouted something before he collapsed. Mu rushed over to the pair with her mouth drooling.

Finally, the pang of hunger that she had been feeling would be satiated. As the other two had already begun biting into the beast, Mu smacked her lips in anticipation as she put a foot in her mouth. The grains of sand seasoned the meat well and the taste was amazing. Unlike the tasteless wall and the mild tasting green plant that Patch had picked up at shore. She ate in large chunks, chewing sloppily as blood stained her teeth.

Her pitch black eyes shined with mirth, as she spoke happily.

"Thank you Patch. Food, good."

Sadly, the beast had only two things on him, a hard and hollow stick and a sharp stick that had cut Jin earlier. Mu wasn't interested in either as she could think of how to use them. She just happily chomped on the leg, smiling stupidly at the other two.

Patch

Patch was happy. After calming down and being less of an idiot he, along with the other two goblins, had managed to take down the monster. He danced with glee as it took it's last breath and said it's final grumble noises. He danced with glee as he pulled off his first chunk of meat. He stopped dancing with glee for a while as he chowed down like a hungry rottweiler. But then he went back and danced with glee once more after he had eaten his fill.

Today was a big and exciting day!

Today Patch had left the cave! He might have made some friends. He ate some green thing. And some sand. And some waves. And some grass. And a couple of pebbles. And a monster!  He had found the monster and made the monster food! It was a day of success. And Patch was not about to get off this train before it stopped. He was going to ride the good-luck as long as it would hold. He turned from his excited dancing and looked at his fellow goblins. He put the pipe in his mouth. In a brand new language he didn't realize he could speak he said. "Chaps, I'm off to do a spot more hunting. You may come along if you wish." With that, he turned and strode of in

a random direction to look for new and exciting monsters to kill.

\\ Rei

The outside world is such a wonderful place. Fro the vibrant blue of the sky, dotted with silvery clouds and adorned with golden sun rays to the deep blue of the sea. From the ivory sands of the beach to the viridian of the vegetation. From the beautiful resounding rhythm of the waves to the wonderful breeze that occasionally blows. Truly, it was everything the old Rei would have imagined through her sick bay. If only she could remember, this whole experience is her dream come true!

Sadly for the now-young-goblin, however, her rumbling stomach was distracting her too much for her to savour all the beautiful sensations. She was so hungry that she would gladly eat a rock. In fact, that medium-sized blue boulder has been looking really delicious for a while. Like, it's all inviting Rei to have a bite or something. For such a piece of rock to be so appetizing; truly magical, this new world she's in.

As she walked closer to the rock, however, her little eyes noticed something. The rock moved! A pair of stalk of some sort was twitching on top of it, and whenever Rei inched closer, it took a step backwards. And when she got reeeeealy close, the rock raised it's arms menacingly. The rock was alive! What kind of sorcery is this?!

"Pat-patri.. aaku?" Rei attempted to call the whatchamacallit old gob she talked with a moment ago in her confusion/excitement. "Pat! Look! This rock is alive!" she finally raised her voice excitedly. She had decided to forget calling him properly so long as both party could understand each other.

Of course, she was far enough for her voice to not reach the cave, and thus, the patriarch would neither be able to hear nor respond to her. Which gave birth to Rei's impulsive thought of running back to the cave to share her finding with the old wise one. But wait! Since the rock does have legs, there is a chance for it to run away while Rei ran back into the cave. That way, not only will the old one not see the rock, he will brand Rei as a liar! He'll most definitely whack her poor forehead once again! The horror!

It was then that a stroke of genius occurred to her. What if she catch the rock, and bring it to the old one? That should do it!

With her plan set, Rei gave herself a well-deserved proud nod to herself, and started to circle the rock, where the imposing hand-claw-thingy could not reach. From there, she decided to dash towards the rock and jump on it. Ride it rodeo-style, yo!
