I don't get why the mother can't just take care of her daughter or why didn't he ask. Or is the answer in the family not approving thing or something?

Maybe because her mother is a workaholic I guess.

I think this is going to go a lot deeper than it appears. She was obviously a young single mom with no support from her family, so there are lots of interesting ways this can go.

 She said in the first chapter that when she ran away from home, that she sort of cut off all ties to her family. Her father had disowned her completely. She could only rely on her brother. I think that she is actually sick. She will probably pass away soon. I could see her using the two weeks to get her dying in order. Maybe getting her funeral paid for, while also setting aside some money for her daughter. She probably tried to contact the father of  her child, but was likely refused. I personally think that her plan is to get the MC to bond with her daughter. To take over her care after she is gone.
