For some reason, I can't access Batoto from my home computer. At first I thought it was a server issue, but I can access it from this work computer, so I think that maybe my home ip is banned?

How can I verify this and, if really banned, the reason for it? I've been using this site for years, never had any problems. I pratically never use the forums, so it can't be anything related to behaviour or such thing...

Can you give us more details? Are there any error messages when you try to access it from home? If so, what do they say?

If there aren't any error messages, clearing your cookies and cache (you'll have to re-log into your sites) should fix most problems.

Thanks for the reply. No, I can't still access it. Even using another browser. The error message is that the site is not available, connection timed out. I had to find a vpn to be able to access the site and write this reply (I'm home, now). So I'm thinking that I've been really banned, or I wouldn't be able to access Batoto even with the vpn. It's strange, because I use this site since almost its beggining, never had any problems. Now suddenly I'm banned, for no apparent reason nor warning. :(

If you can access your account via a VPN or at work, then your account hasn't been banned. Most likely it's a DNS or ISP issue on your end.

try connecting directly to the site by going here: http://89.233.106.194/

If you can't, I'd say your ISP is blocking Batoto for some reason

Can't a mod verify this, please?

No a "mod" can't verify this. If your ip is banned you are banned on a server firewall level.

The most likely cause is that you have used some software or scripts that do things with Batoto which Batoto is not designed for. Like download for example.

Anything comes to mind there?

Indeed I use a program to download the mangas I'm following, to read offline. Why would that be bad for Batoto? I use it for personal use, I don't distribute the manga I download, I don't think I'm breaking any copyrights... What can I do to solve this problem? Contact the admin of this site?

Problem is, depending on the speed and number of page requests, Batoto's image servers might interpret it as a denial-of-service attack.

send your IP to [email protected]. Grumpy is the only one that can confirm/edit the firewalls directly.

Also, as naturegeek says, there are anti-flood measures. So sometimes downloaders get tagged and can be banned for excessive requests. Batoto was never meant to be be a downloading source. So, we don't support this behavior. I notice some people also try to increase download speed more and more by increasing threads/decreasing timeouts because it's slow using bots/programs. But the server will then throttle you more, ultimately banning you.

To what Grumpy said I'll just add that you will most likely get banned again if you continue to download.

Some more reasons why we do not offer downloads/want people to download from us indirectly:

  • Most of the time downloads are offered from the scanlators directly. If people download from us they won't visit the scanlators' website which is the actual source of the scanlations. This makes it even harder for them to find staff.
  • Many of those scripts/apps/etc are badly written and put a lot of strain on our servers.
  • a lot of the offered software/apps/scripts run ads to make money of it. Which means they use our resources that we have to pay for and profit from it.

I've sent na email, which I'll quote: "The software I use to download the manga I bookmarked is DomDomSoft. I don't know how it works, I've just set it up to not download too many chapters at the same time. It usually downloads an average of 4-5 manga chapters per day. Although during my holidays a lot more manga was accumulated. But I sincerely didn't know that this was bad for Batoto. I just thought that it was indifferent for your servers to have a browser download images to display or the software download images to save on disk. I'll leave my case in your hands and apolagize in advance if inadvertedly is was doing any harm to Batoto." I don't know the inner workings of the software, so I don't know if it's one of those that strain Batoto's servers. Maybe it wasn't the software, but the fact that it got several chapters in the same day after my hollidays? Some Batoto's script found it strange someone was Reading too many manga chapters in the same day? I hadn't thought about your first point, though. Although it's somewhat difficult to keep up with several scanlator's sites, updates, filelockers/torrents with limited or slow downloads or even broken links and such. I guess I could content myself to read online and only download from the scanlators' sites my favourite mangas.
