I'm perfectly okay with him, as he reminds me of a mix of Egil from Sword Art, and Jet from Cowboy Bebop.

the guy's certainly hiding something I'll give you that. He may have been a former knight or official or something. At any rate he's not just another shopkeeper/blacksmith plus he "understands" the shield hero and is unusually kind to him
