Presence
What is presence? Well, to put it simply it’s just how much influence a certain object/character/or event has on the story. In any tale, there are plot points and devices that are not so important to the larger context and ones that are integral to our understanding of the story. This concept of what is important and what is not so important also transfers over to the realm of role-play. In the case of role-play, the more important something is, the harder it is for players to change or alter it against the Game Master’s wishes. As Re:cursio is a player based RP, it is important that the “players” have real power to affect the story in ways that they want to, and cannot easily be affected themselves. However, as with any RP, if players are given too much free rein, the story would collapse. So, listed below are general guidelines to “presence” in Re:cursio, to give both players and readers an understanding of what to expect out of what kinds of people/events within the RP.
“Denizens” – This is the general term for inhabitants of the Dying Worlds. They can be considered “supporting cast” in a way. Though they may well be fully developed characters, they are not the focus of the “story”, and thus do not hold much significance. Their main role is to give the worlds they reside in unique identities, as well as affect the story or the players’ understanding of the story. As such, they have the least amount of presence, and can be easily affected (ie: they are easily controlled, befriended, or killed by the Rabbits).
“Rabbits” – This is the general term for “players”, or inhabitants of the Spiral. As active members of the RP, they can be considered the “protagonists”. As such, they are the focus of the “story”, and are not easily affected by events or each other. However, Rabbits are still affected by game mechanics to a sense, and cannot become a “one-man-show” in running the story. (ie: special GM granted powers such as Fates can still “kill” Rabbits or otherwise affect them, and a Rabbit will not generally be able to take on and utterly obliterate a boss by themselves).
“Anomalies” – This is the general term for “integral plot points”. For the most part these are either “bosses” or the “central event” that will be responsible for the death of the world that they inhabit. They can usually be found in the “climax” of the story, and on average have more presence than just one player. This will often mean that combatting a boss takes several players working together in order to prevail, though this may not always be the case. (ie: dealing with an anomaly will either be a group effort or one that requires special GM granted powers).
“Administrators” – This is the general term for the “benefactors” that inhabit the Spiral. Containing the most presence out of anything else within the RP, these beings will generally be able to completely ignore any efforts made by Rabbits against them, and completely put them down. This may change only after the overall plot of the RP has moved to a certain point. (ie: regardless of powers possessed by the Rabbit in question, an Administrator will not be affected).
