Im Just gonna come out and say what I know (or atleast what Ive heard)

Ken Akamatsu and his Series Negima! actually went through some Legal trouble with the publishers in Japan and it came to a boiling point revolving around ownership rights of the story and characters after the series end.  Supposedly Ken was outraged and threatened to end the series prematurely unless he was treated fairly and his Publishers at the time called his bluff. As many have come to see he upheld his threat and gave Negima! a quick and unfulfilled ending and preceded to claim his career as a Mangaka to be retired.

He later went on to spearhead a website for out-of-print and cancelled manga where the website will be run on ad-revenue and will also have a dedicated translation effort to multiple languages.

With time in retirement and fan outrage he eventually decided to reenter the world of Manga with a new Title based on the existing Negima! world but with new characters to tie into the old franchise.

The setting of a shonen manga and the change from his Harem archetype was his personal choice in a effort to appeal to a larger audience.

Ken has since stated that he intends UQ Holder to be his Final work before a permanent retirement and when asked if it will provide the ending to Negima! that many fans hope for he replied that his ending to Negima! is still the true ending but he will like to see more of the world and may provide insight into what the fate was for some of the Negima! Cast.

Much of this information is what I've heard around various message boards, but i know for a fact the incident with his publishers to be true.

Im Personally sad to hear that he plans to retire without ever returning to Love Hina.
