I read the whole forum, but I still was not able to find the answer, so I´m asking here, though it might be a stupid question.

I would like to translate manga to other language than English, but I was not able to find any raws to use. Is it alright if I just download english (or some other) translation of the manga and use it to make my own version? Should I ask the scanlating group for permission? Or should I just give them proper credits?

Sorry, I´m a total beginner in this matter. It´s my first time trying to do something like this, so please bear with me.

do these two, and pretty much 99.9% of groups will say yes.

honestly, groups like it when people want to use their releases. it's like an ego boost.

also, this should probably belong in the "comic hosting" thread here: https://vatoto.com/forums/forum/185-general-comic-hosting-stuff/

Except when they put fucking watermarks on them. Egoistic pricks.

Because there exist those groups who just like to take and make it their own, watermarking the release makes it more fun for em to clean and redraw :D

And also for those site what remove credit page

Still, they are really egoistic. I was planning on remaking Vagabond with better scans I found in a spanish site, so I gently asked them for the raws, and explained they wouldn't have any "competition" because I was gonna  do it in english. They still didn't send me any raws. You see, what I most like to do is remake old manga with cleaner raws, so why deny it?

You do also know that if they provide u the unwatermark version other will take that instead, then what is the point in watermarking it to begin with :P

Watermarking serves may purposes, this is also to encourage other group to go and buy their own raw and support the author.

Though sometime some group take it to an extreme level.

Well, yeah, but mine would already be in english, so if the group wanted the raws to translate it to other language, they'd probably want it in japanese. Still, I think this possessiveness is really bad for us. Our interests are the same, to share awesome manga in good quality.

But they can use it as raw, u do know there are many groups who translate from English to their own language.

Indeed, but not everyone play by the same rules :P

Yeah, they can. Still, I don't see how that's a problem.

Sadly. :(

Maybe they didn't have the raws to give you? At any rate, it's a completely separate issue from them watermarking the scans, unless you were just planning on taking their cleaned scans with or without their permission and reusing them.

They do. No, I asked for permission.

You know, they're not entitled to give you anything. In fact when people ask me for scans I tell them they can do what they want because it's the internet, but in all honesty it would be better if they purchased their own version and scanned and cleaned. At least it somewhat supports the author that way. I mean, you do know most groups stop doing manga when the series is licensed not because they're scared of lawsuits, but because they truly want to support the author, right?

I find it kind of selfish not to share it. I know they spent their money buying it, but heck, shouldn't we be united as a group appreciating the same stuff? We should cooperate to make the manga avaliable in as many languages as possible. I still find licensing problems quite badly dealt with. It's not like taking down a manga from the net will gie it more publicity. On the other hand, maybe people will never know about it and when it's licensed won't want to buy it. It's a complicated matter.

It's also selfish to expect that people should just give you something for nothing.

What did you offer in return?

But why would they be interested in some random manga raws?
It is customary to pay for raws with editing work.
