The last episode wasn't that bad but it wasn't exactly great either. Honestly I don't get it and don't understand what Studio Clown is trying to do here. It feels like the they cut all of the good parts in the season and in the last episode on purpose. I mean what was the point of hinting the pierrots and kanou in the first episode if they weren't even going to reveal it in the last episode? Or are they saving that reveal for the manga's route which they're considering to adapt? I'm still butthurt over the fact that they didn't show Uta being part of the clowns. And then they even teased the possibilities of a :re adaptation but how on earth are they even going to link it with this season? It will make zero sense to a normal viewer unless they already some prior knowledge about the series through the manga or the studio does a reboot. (Not likely to happen. I know)

I agree with you. The episode itself is not that bad but the fact that it's the last, the ep that should tie all the loose ends, makes it terrible. A lot of people hate it because it has either left important scences or made no proper conclusion.

This season was quite disappointing. It was supposed to be an Anime Original but it only manage to present trivial changes to us. I guess it was only labeled that way because it may cause some confusion of what really happened in the manga since the ending was also vague. This season seems to be rushed too but it's not solely because it was compressed in 12 episodes. It's also pretty boring imo because it spent most of their screentime to show something excessively that only needs to be shown for a few seconds in order to be understood. Oh and also lack of bgm makes it feel empty and bland.

They might have let that episode left open because there might be a 3rd season(i wish im wrong with this). the after credits just had Cafe re: and older touka Shown which feels more like of a teaser . Putting it at the end of the credits and making it really short as a conclusion makes no sense (well pierrot is really good in making no sense at all so, who knows). they may go original or wait for it to progress while givhng us some ovas. seems like pierrot is already milking tg so 3rd season is still in the realm of possibility.

Ha, ha, ha. Do you honestly believe that? The merchandising is selling like hot-cakes, everything about Tokyo Ghoul is selling like hot-cakes. Pierrot isn't an idiot (outside of making good adaptations), they are gonna milk this series, also:

Boolossus, you were right. I only hope for the best now they know TG= money.

Pierrot doesn't own the franchise dude

Y'know, because of how this ended up doing in the end, it gives me some hope that things will improve regarding the animated version as things go on. This blew up in their faces in a way they never expected it to and I'm actually very hopeful they'll put a lot more effort into the series because they can see it's worth far more than what they thought at first. They're definitely gonna want to keep their hands on the rights to animate the series. Yeah, the series wasn't as good as it could've been, for sure, but look at the upside: They might just give noticeably better treatment to the series from this point on.

You know, the more I think about it, the more it seems to me that Hide isn't actually dead in this version.  My interpretation of the episode is thus:

  • After Hide collapses, Kaneki assumes he is dead and burns down Anteiku in his grief, hoping to die with him.
  • He realizes that Hide is still alive after the latter smiles (also the moment where his hair turns black)
  • he gives himself up to the CCG so that they'll save Hide

Agreed. Things like this are why I think we'll get a 3rd season working as an "interquel" of sorts to put things back on track when it comes to :RE or they might just head into purely anime original territory, though I have some doubts on the latter, they'll probably just want to make something to give people more Tokyo Ghoul for the sake of more money while getting things back on track so :RE can actually work. They could actually give some meaning to Kaneki being with Aogiri if they go into the "fix it interquel" seeing how we could have a case of "I'll give you info on Aogiri if you save Hide" or something, I dunno. While the ending being as ambiguous feels really troll-ish, it at least leaves the possibility of them doing something to help put this series back on track so :RE makes sense.

Frankly, I have the feeling this entire mess was caused by everyone involved in the series, Ishida included. You have the higher ups not confident on the series doing well at all and just cutting budget, a scriptwriter who ends up focusing on thematic consistency within episodes but ignores a lot of important elements, and you have Ishida coming up with the crazy idea of doing a new storyline longer than his original manga which he hadn't even finished by the time the series started, which was likely part of the cause of dividing the series into two 12 episode seasons which meant you needed to get to the torture scene in a matter of 12 episodes seeing how white haired Kaneki was something marketing was so focused on. And there's probably a lot more to it but I can't think clearly atm. Even then, I enjoyed the series, though it could've turned out much better. It gave me a fair amount of entertainment and it was one of the series I enjoyed the most this season from the few I watched and it gave me some of the moments I wanted to see animated. Besides, it's not like I was paying to watch it (as well as I'd daresay many of us), so I don't feel any reason or right to be actually upset at how it turned out, y'know.

This blogger I like wrote an interesting article on the ending to the anime; it's a nice analysis of the themes of TG.

Also, this is the second or third time I've seen a connection made between TG and Oedipus Rex, so I'm starting to think it may have been one of the inspirations for the story.

Sir, I know how the anime industry works. Pierrot has the rights to anything related to TG's anime. Is the same with Deen and Fate Night, it had to pass eight years to have another studio animating anything related to Fate Night. No other studio than Pierrot can touch TG until Pierrot's license expire (ten years from now on). Another example is Disney and Peter Pan's franchise, Disney owns the rights for the designs but some hospital in UK owns the rights for the books.

You wanted Madhouse or another studio to animate TG? Bad news for you, they can't.
