So , are you exceeding SQL queries limit , or CPU limit ? First time hearing something as Bandwith limit ( too much trafic )...

Well, most dedicated server leasers (save the French ones ! OVH France rules !  ^^; ) impose on their users a monthly bandwidth usage limitation. The limit may be very high or very low, but, yeah, there's a limit. After which the price to pay per excess gigabytes goes very high very fast.

Bandwidth model really comes 3 ways.

  • Total transferred - This is like our case where we have a limit of allowed to use X amount of TB/month. This is the most common in vps/dedi level and used to be most common in shared hosting as well until the 3rd latter dominated the market. Also, almost all premium bandwidth are also sold like this at dedi level.
  • Dedicated connection - This is sold in like 10mbps, 100mbps, 1gbps, etc. Because the bandwidth is guaranteed, they usually cost a lot. 1gbps would cost like $500+/month. This is the most common model bought by large bandwidth users and all of wholesale bandwidth (ie datacenters).
  • Shared and uncapped/unmetered/unlimited connection - This is usually unreliable. Even if you buy 1gbps port, there's no guarantee that you can even get 1mbps (though, i'm sure you will get at least that...) and are often met with congestion issues. This model relies on overselling to sell the port speed at a low price. This is now the most common model for shared hosting.

We use the first model because 100mbps is too small for us and I find it hard to fully utilize a 1gbps connection. This is because our image server use the hardware in a certain way. To fully utilize a dedicated gbit connection, I'd calculate that I need 12+ disk raid 10 setup which gets very costly to prevent saturating disk utilization at around 8~16GB ram. Pricing point and needs of it would also force a single point of image server, leaving all it one basket. So, what I do is get a bandwidth model that sells via total transferred on a gbps port. So, it's really a balance of what's the best pricing point as well as uses.

There are some special cases like OVH who has 500mbps guaranteed connection which is basically a software capped connection on a 10gbps port (for newer ones anyway). But, OVH's staple server builds come in only 2 disks, so even with gigantic ram that they offer, my current testing is showing it's extremely hard to reach even 400mbps of usage as disk utilization saturates (which is still better than I expected). OVH realizes this and that's why they can afford to sell relatively high bandwidth quotas with low prices since few will reach it.
