Ergo Proxy
This 23 episode sci-fi anime from Manglobe is set in a ravaged, blasted futur e where humans have confined themselves to domed cities in order to survive. Ergo Proxy is the story of an amnesiac immigrant named Vincent Law and the intelligence operative Re-l Mayer, as they are caught up in the tangled web of secrets surrounding the city of Romdeau and the truth behind the chaos. Central to all of this is the nature of the utopia of Romdeau and the powerful, mysterious monsters known as Proxies.
Ergo Proxy is notable for its beautiful animation as well as its love of Mind Screw. It contains elements of Post-Cyberpunk, steampunk, and Film Noir; and draws motifs from advanced psychology and philosophy.

When Ryuko shows up in search of her father's murderer, she immediately suspects that Satsuki knows something and declares war on her. With the aid of a sentient uniform called Senketsu and a red half-scissor blade that can destroy Goku Uniforms, Ryuko fights to avenge her father and take down Honnouji Academy in the process.
Serial Experiments Lain
An erudite, confusing, and chilling anime from the late 1990s, Serial Experiments Lain is Creepy Awesome seinen cyberpunk, as well as a notable Mind Screw in the genre. Shōnen has Neon Genesis Evangelion, shojo has Revolutionary Girl Utena, and seinen has Lain. The show takes an information-rich dive deep into the nature of reality and truth, and in the process leads the viewer to come to his or her own conclusions about the meaning of the show, the meaning of reality, and even what actually happens in both.
Speed Grapther
It starts when the cynical and jaded Intrepid Reporter Tatsumi Saiga is sent to investigate a fetish club for the richest in Japan, whose "goddess" is a teenager named Kagura. She's an odd, waifish young girl with the power to give people super-powers coming from their desires, obsessions and fetishes; when she kisses Saiga during their first encounter, she grants him the power to destroy anything he takes a photo of, related to the sexual pleasure he gets from photographing something really interesting. His curiosity piqued, Saiga decides to learn more about Kagura and her powers, then vows to free her from the Roppongi Club and the Tennouzu corrupt group (whose head is Kagura's ruthless mother, Shinzen) that cruelly uses the girl for their own purposes...
Texhnolyze
In the not-too-distant future, deep underground, descendants of a banished generation vie for control of the crumbling city of Lux. Ichise, an orphan turned prize fighter, loses an arm and a leg to satisfy an enraged promoter. On the brink of death, he is taken in by a young female doctor and used as a guinea pig for the next evolution of texhnolyze.
Having adjusted to his new limbs, Ichise is eventually taken under the wing of Onishi, the powerful but distrusted leader of Organo, a criminal organization with some hold over the people of Lux. Meanwhile, four different factions begin to draw battlelines for territorial control of the city: the aforementioned Organo; the Union, a fiercely anti-texhnolyze faction; the Racan, a group of rebellious texhnolyzed youths; and the Class, a mysterious group of privileged beings who lurk behind the city. As Ichise is unwillingly drawn deeper into an uncontrollable war, he learns of his possible future from the prophet girl Ran, who guides him from the shadows in his darkest times. When society comes crashing down, Ichise must uncover the truth about Lux and fight for his survival.
Made by the same team that produced Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze is often considered to be one of the strangest and darkest anime ever made.
