I opened this topic because many discusses the spoiler besides me...

 

About Kaneki's kagune:

Spoiler

Ghouls gain this power if they repeatedly cannibalize other ghouls. So this is the way he got it: Kaneki ate other ghouls. A kagune gained that way typically takes the form of some kind of armor.

The kagune looks most similar to Yamori's. Yamori was also the first ghoul Kaneki cannibalized.

But even that Tsukiyama calls this power crazy. Considering how many screws that guy has loose, that's quite telling.

 

The specifics of this power will be explained soon, in the Aogiri arc.

 

About the mystery man:

That guy's identity is unknown. It's not even clear if he is human or if he is a ghoul. In chapter 92, he just acted as Kanou's bodyguard. That makes it even more weird, because he was nowhere to be seen during the raid of Kanou's lab.

 

Everything that follows is speculation.

 

I think it's likely that this guy triggered the steel frame "accident".

 

Mystery man is able to fend off a ghoul without any trouble (even if Maiko Abe is a really weak ghoul). So if he is human, he is most likely a ghoul investigator.

 

I always get the feeling his silhouette looks similar to Arima's. If that is true, Amon's face will be hilarious when he finds out that his idol was involved in the human-ghoul-transformation research.

 

About Owl (this is an extremely heavy spoiler. It's central to the story for dozens of chapters.)

There are two owls. One owl is the manager. The other one is infamous. In full, that owl is called the "one-eyed Owl". Ten years ago, the one-eyed Owl made mincemeat out of lots and lots of ghoul investigators. Back then, Arima was the one who defeated the one-eyed Owl, and Owl's fate since then was unknown. However, the manager couldn't be the one-eyed Owl because the manager isn't one-eyed. At different times, he shows kakugan in both eyes. But it was obvious that the manager was somehow related to the infamous Owl.

 

In chapter 118, Kaneki enters Anteiku furiously (I can't remember that he ever showed such a death stare before) and then asks the manager, if the one-eyed Owl is the manager's child.

 

In full, Kaneki asks the following (and because the full question is even more spoilerish, I put it in another spoiler tag):

"Aogiri's head, the one-eyed King... or rather, the one-eyed Owl... Is that "your child", Yoshimura?"

 

So the identity of that infamous one-eyed ghoul should be clear now. One-Eye = Aogiri's head = one-eyed King = one-eyed Owl = the manager's child.

Naki and Yamori were imprisoned together in the ghoul prison, IIRC. I don't remember where that sign they always do comes from, but Kaneki copies it later.

 

I don't know what the clowns are planning. Two clowns have been introduced, Nico and Souta. Also, the leader of the clowns broke out of prison, I think. And in the past, Arima once pursued the clowns, IIRC.

I miscounted lol, I was completely thinking about something else. Yes, it's been 6 months and 8 months in total since Kaneki's "accident." Pretty short time to have your life flipped over to awesome if you asked me.

In chapter 118, Hide's talk with Touka about Kaneki is pretty interesting.

 

About Kaneki's personality:

Touka asks Hide what kind of person Kaneki is. He first tells Touka that during elementary school, Kaneki was a shy boy who was always reading. Some classmates teased Kaneki. According to Hide, Kaneki also had a lonely, sad expression after Kaneki's mother died. These are all things that can be easily guessed.

 

The next part is intriguing. Hide tells a story from their elementary school years: Once, Kaneki's class performed a play. That play was unexpectedly successful. Why was the play successful? Because Kaneki made a great performance as the lead, although he was half-forced to play that role. (BTW, Kaneki also brings that play up once, when he talks with the illusionary Rize in his mind. According to Kaneki, Hide's role was "the servant of the witch".)

 

Hide's point is: Kaneki is a good actor. And because Kaneki is such a good actor, he uses that skill all the time to shoulder his burden alone. Kaneki puts up a front.

 

If one slightly exaggerates Hide's point, then Kaneki would be "The Actor". Looking at Kaneki's character from that angle, Kaneki has acted two roles until now. First, he acts the role "The Good Son", in commemoration of his mother. After that role collapsed in the Aogiri arc, he starts to act the role "The Centipede", for Kaneki thinks he has to act like that to protect his friends. This second role has started to collapse, too, after Kaneki nearly killed Banjou and Shinohara. I wonder what Kaneki's next role will look like?

This would also mean that the real Kaneki is the one from the elementary school years: The shy, lonely boy that is mourning his mother and suffering alone. The Kaneki we see at the beginning would be partially fake.

 

It also gives an explanation why Hide is Kaneki's only friend from his school years: Hide's perceptiveness allowed Hide to see beyond Kaneki's acting. Hide could see how Kaneki really felt.

 

Something Hide uses to read Kaneki:

At the end of the talk with Touka, he shares a secret with her about Kaneki. Kaneki's acting is not perfect. He has a habit: When he tries to hide something from his counterpart, he covers his chin with his left hand.

 

Ishida must have planned that habit right from the start. It already appears in chapter 1 - when Kaneki tries to hide from Rize that he just looked at her breasts.

 

And if one looks for all occurences of this habit, one gets an idea just how much Hide must know. I get the feeling he may be more knowledgeable about the current affairs in the ghoul world than Kaneki and Amon.

I didn't translate it, because I think it's relatively obvious what happened. Touka messed up when she filled that cup of coffee. The manager thought Kaneki was the one who messed up. Kaneki didn't correct the manager, but instead took the blame. Kaneki hid that Touka was the real culprit.

Kaneki also showed that habit in chapter 30, when Hide brought up the "Rabbit" topic.

• Hide bugged Yamori. He was the anonymous informant that revealed the location of Aogiri's hideout to CCG. I'm sure he knows everything that happened to Kaneki in December. That also means that Hide knew since December that Kanou was creating more artificial ghouls. CCG's investigators only figured that out half a year later.
• For sure, Hide has realized that Eyepatch=Centipede=Kaneki. Hide knows that Kaneki was somehow involved with the Rabbit incident, and from his work with Amon, he should know that some "Eyepatch" was involved in that incident, too.
• Hence, Hide knows that Kaneki covered up for Rabbit. There aren't many people Kaneki would stand up for, so I'm sure he suspects that Rabbit=Touka. And Touka's clothing sometimes screams "I'm Rabbit".
• I think Hide knows about Nishiki, too.
• Hide always seems to appear at important places or important times just by chance. I think he does that deliberately.
• Hide talks with Takatsuki at the book signing, just after Kaneki and Hinami left. Afterwards, Takatsuki goes to CCG's 20th ward branch office and tells Amon that Kanou's lab is originally a CCG facility. I suspect Hide was told that, too, and that he directed her to go there. (Takatsuki's personality seems to be similar to Hide's.)

Hide is the story's detective. I don't think he has bad intentions (most likely, he just wants to help Kaneki), but I'm never able to read what his next steps are.
I wonder if Hide made a deal with the manager between chapters 9 and 10.

About Owl again:

I had a look at the chapter, now. I think it's extremely relevant to the plot.
It seems the following is going on:

The manager tells the story of the ghoul "Kuzen". To survive, Kuzen ate people, ghouls and humans alike. Kuzen cursed his fate, he was strong, but lonely.
Kuzen decided to join some ghoul organization (the members of this organization seem to wear hats, like the manager still does even in the present). He became a "cleaner". The organization provided him with food, lodging and clothing. But Kuzen was still lonely, the organization was not the place where he belonged.
Then, Kuzen met a waitress in an old café. The waitress' name was Ukina, a human. They became close, however, Ukina soon figured out that Kuzen was a ghoul. But she still accepted him, and he accepted her. They fell in love.
Ukina became pregnant. Kuzen tried to tell her that a human and a ghoul cannot have a child and wanted her to give up. But she didn't give up and started to eat human meat.
Finally, a miracle occurred and a child was born. (It isn't told if it's a boy or a girl.)
Kuzen found a notebook. It was about the organization he was a member of. Ukina was a journalist that investigated that organization. They had met without realizing that. The organization had become aware of Ukina, too, and her relationship with him.
No matter how powerful Kuzen was, he couldn't go up against the organization. The organization ordered: "Take responsibility." Escape was no longer possible.
It was the last time Kuzen did his job as a cleaner.
But he still had his child. He hid it from the organization in the 24th ward.
Time passed. Kuzen learned that a ghoul with the nickname "one-eyed Owl" appeared. That ghoul hated the world. Kuzen was immediately convinced that this ghoul was his child. He expected that the organization's upper echelon would notice eventually. The child had been critically wounded when it had attacked CCG. What would happen if the organization chased it? So Kuzen took the place of the one-eyed Owl.

The manager directly adresses Kaneki afterwards. He says that Kaneki is trying to throw away a part that is also a half of him (directly referencing what he said in chapter 9). He urges Kaneki to choose again. He should really think it through. At the end, the manager says that he wants Kaneki to save the lonely and eventually also his child. He asks if Kaneki won't return to Anteiku.

At the end, Touka chases Kaneki.

My thoughts:
I'm not sure if it is a good idea to return to Anteiku. I'm worried what CCG will do if Kaneki does return.

That shadow organization - I have a bad feeling about this. I wonder if we already saw other members. Somebody should try looking for other people wearing hats.

I figured that much had happened, but I didn't know the manager killed his lover when they found out she was a journalist. Like someone decided to take a dump on their miraculous fortune. I get the feeling that the upper echelon have a huge influence on the world seeing how that powerful manager knew he couldn't go against them. I'm willing to bet that this organization has their influence affecting both CCG and Aogiri but the war between them is just a decoy for maybe the half-ghoul project (It always struck me as strange that a former CCG scientist like Kanou is willing to cooperate with Aogiri, and the person he was talking when he met Madam A seems to be linked to this.) Some people I suspect is part of that organization (or at least in alignment with Kanou) is probably Arima and his sidekick, some of the higher ups in CCG shown in chapter 118 and that black pony-tail ghoul. The clown gang probably serve as a mercenaries that works behind the scenes (like Souta and Nico) to serve as eyes, ears and manipulate what's happening. EDIT: I just noticed that Ayata wears the same attire as Kuzen minus the hat. I know he's a strong ghoul and they built those armor exoskeletons out of his kagune but we don't know much else of what he had done in the past (or at least I can't tell lol.) Either way from the looks of it, he looks like a powerful ghoul who just happen to settle down with his two kids but it didn't look like that panned out well.

So is there gonna be a parallel of a human and ghoul relationship between Kaneki and Touka? It seems like that's where it's getting at since now Touka knows he's lying to mask his lonely self. The tension between them after what has happened so far (Kaneki's talk with the manager, the reason why half-ghoul babies exist and etc.) is drawing closer to that conclusion.

I don't think it's like that. This organization existed for decades, so it is clearly establishment. The hat guys should have no interest in major changes in the ghoul world.

Kanou said he and Aogiri have the same goal when he joined Aogiri, so if he is a member of the organization, Aogiri would be a branch of it. But Yoshimura fears that the organization could harm his child that seems to be the head of Aogiri. Why would he fear that they would harm his child if Aogiri were a branch of the organization?

It's likely it's the other way around. IIRC, Kanou said that "someone" placed a cage around the world, and that the power of the one-eyed ghoul is needed to break that cage. At first, I thought he meant CCG's higher-ups, but what if he really meant the hat guys? That would mean Aogiri is trying to fight against the organization.

These hat guys seem to dress similar to the doves... Is there some connection between CCG and the organization? Both organizations are establishment.

 

The half-ghoul project is strange. Officially, CCG never started this project for ethical reasons. Nevertheless, it was a CCG project, since CCG built the underground facility (but CCG disguised the ownership). Why would CCG be interested in creating artifical ghouls? That doesn't make sense. On top of that facility is a mansion owned by Yasuhisa. If he was involved in CCG's research, he should have been under CCG's protection. But some random ghoul killed him and his wife. Amon's conclusion is that CCG erased him. For what reason? Did someone put a stop to the project and ordered cleanup?

Then, Kanou, a former CCG physician, takes over the facility and continues the research. He successfully creates at least three artificial ghouls: Kaneki and the Yasuhisa twins. During the raid of his lab, Kanou and Aogiri join forces. Kanou should be somewhere else now, creating lots of artificial ghouls.

 

I'm still waiting for Touka and Kaneki to become a couple. I miss Touka bossing Kaneki around.

I think that Touka is also lonely. She clearly misses Kaneki. When she was at Kamii, she was thinking about Kaneki all the time. The only other person Touka is relatively close to is Yoriko, but Touka has to hide from her who she really is.

 

Touka's family is complicated. Arata was caught by Shinohara and Mado (it's ironic that in the end, Touka unknowingly killed one of the investigators responsible for her father's fate) and turned into one of CCG's experimental subjects. (Shinohara is running around with the quinque "Arata", that armor. CCG is still "improving" it.) The fate of Hikari, Touka's mother, is not so clear. However, Hikari looks a lot like Yomo's sister and Arata looks a lot like the guy that apologized to Yomo that he couldn't protect Yomo's sister. That would mean that Yomo is Touka's uncle (I don't think Touka knows) and that Arima killed Touka's mother.

And the brother is going around killing ghoul investigators.

It seems to be a family trait that each family member goes berserk at one point in time. Yomo, Touka and Ayato are examples.

A new organization is revealed...

 

I think Kanou was just too vague. He told the twins that they should show "hospitality" to the visitors. So they did that.

 

The Yasuhisa twins' backstory goes like this: Their parents were killed by some ghoul (Amon now suspects that this was really CCG's doing). CCG picked them up. For orphans that are picked up by CCG, the story typically goes like this: CCG nourishes their hatred of the ghouls and gives them special training until they enter the Academy. It's one way CCG gets new staff. And it's part of the cycle of revenge: The CCG investigators kill ghouls, so the ghouls bear a grudge against the humans and kill humans. The human orphans become CCG's future investigators.

The Yasuhisa twins' story differs: They got CCG's special training, but someday, they went missing.

I would have to look up his backstory again, but if my memory serves me right, Suzuya was imprisoned by ghouls before he was picked up by CCG (or so the official story goes). He became an investigator by orders from the top, without enrolling in the Academy. (The other one who became an investigator this way is Arima.) What is strange is that his smell attracts ghouls, similar to Kaneki.

He's also on the run (he's already pissed off two or three organizations by now) and still has unfinished business. Still, that didn't stop the manager from spreading half-ghoul babies. Kuzen decided to join some ghoul organization (the members of this organization seem to wear hats, like the manager still does even in the present). He became a "cleaner". The organization provided him with food, lodging and clothing. But Kuzen was still lonely, the organization was not the place where he belonged.
Then, Kuzen met a waitress in an old café. The waitress' name was Ukina, a human. They became close, however, Ukina soon figured out that Kuzen was a ghoul. But she still accepted him, and he accepted her. They fell in love.
Ukina became pregnant. Kuzen tried to tell her that a human and a ghoul cannot have a child and wanted her to give up. But she didn't give up and started to eat human meat.
Finally, a miracle occurred and a child was born. (It isn't told if it's a boy or a girl.)
Kuzen found a notebook. It was about the organization he was a member of. Ukina was a journalist that investigated that organization. They had met without realizing that. The organization had become aware of Ukina, too, and her relationship with him.
No matter how powerful Kuzen was, he couldn't go up against the organization. The organization ordered: "Take responsibility." Escape was no longer possible.
It was the last time Kuzen did his job as a cleaner.
But he still had his child. He hid it from the organization in the 24th ward.
Time passed. Kuzen learned that a ghoul with the nickname "one-eyed Owl" appeared. That ghoul hated the world. Kuzen was immediately convinced that this ghoul was his child. He expected that the organization's upper echelon would notice eventually. The child had been critically wounded when it had attacked CCG. What would happen if the organization chased it? So Kuzen took the place of the one-eyed Owl.

The manager directly adresses Kaneki afterwards. He says that Kaneki is trying to throw away a part that is also a half of him (directly referencing what he said in chapter 9). He urges Kaneki to choose again. He should really think it through. At the end, the manager says that he wants Kaneki to save the lonely and eventually also his child. He asks if Kaneki won't return to Anteiku.

At the end, Touka chases Kaneki.

My thoughts:
I'm not sure if it is a good idea to return to Anteiku. I'm worried what CCG will do if Kaneki does return.

That shadow organization - I have a bad feeling about this. I wonder if we already saw other members. Somebody should try looking for other people wearing hats.

Would be funny if one-eye ghoul is in truth not his child. Though that's very unlikely.

 

Touka and Kaneki fateful reunion >///////< They need to have a real talk. I miss the time when Touka is always scolding Kaneki for making mistake..
