Not only mmorpgs, It has several paralells with table top games as well (grandaddy of mmorpgs)

Does anyone know of anygames where you aquire skills and level them up like the Gamer does?

I can't think if any that do both at the moment, maybe "Dungeon Siege" but I haven't played that in ages so my memories a little fuzzy.

Elder Scrolls series, the last one is Skyrim, skills improve by using.

Has anyone read Darwin's Game? It's a manga about a guy who gets sucked into a game that is going on without anyone's notice. Basically, you fight other players to the death. Not much similarities with The Gamer other than both of the comics have game themes.
