The mera mera no mi itself was some very subtle foreshadowing.  We knew someone was going to get it and that the recipient would be very meaningful to Luffy.  There really isn't a more suitable person to possess it.

While I agree that the weight of his dead brothers' dreams on his shoulders adds depth to his character, Sabo coming back gives Luffy something that he thought he lost forever - his dream of surpassing his brothers on his way to become Pirate King.

With Luffy's personality, he would never accept that he is truly the Pirate King if he never determined whether or not he was stronger than Ace.  With Ace dead, he'd never know for sure if he was stronger in the end.  Sabo solves this problem.  We learned in the flashback that Sabo and Ace were virtually equal to one another in fighting ability.  If Sabo eats the mera mera no mi, then he is a perfect stand-in for Ace (who was at one point a partial replacement for Sabo).  Without a doubt Luffy will once again declare his rivalry with Sabo before the arc is over.

That said, I'll only truly be satisfied with the return of Sabo if Oda adequately explains why Sabo didn't try to save Ace.

I'm okay with Sabo not getting in touch with them sooner.  If he was with Dragon who never went home to visit his son, it's perfectly reasonable that Sabo was never given the opportunity to come out of the shadows.  I wouldn't be surprised if Sabo was a Loguetown with Dragon (probably standing next to Bartolomeo during the execution. haha)

How disappointed are you now? It was hinted in the manga that he was alive. Though in the previous databook he was referred as decease but Oda never mentioned in SBS that he was dead.

Although I understand how you feel, I personally read that arc with the additional impression that it was foreshadowing of the current Sabo, not just so we could feel even more sad about Luffy's loss. It was always in the back of my mind that Sabo was still alive; it was just a matter of time until he was revealed. Why did I think that? First, I wasn't satisfied with his death (so I wanted him to be alive, hehe). It's a waste to kill him off like that given his unique background. Second, there's no need to introduce a second brother just to intensify emotions. It gets too dramatic. Losing one brother is bad enough. If that added drama comes with a twist, however, then it has meaning, which is why I figured Sabo was still out there, and of course the other signs reinforced my belief.

Lol OP is hilarious: Sabo is DEAD!!! and if he's alive show me the proof!

I don't care that the author never said Sabo was dead and gone!

That time when Dragon saves someone with horrific injuries in the same chapter where you don't see Sabo actually die doesn't count!

The fact that Dragon's buddy Ivankov - known the world over as a Miracle Person, and who once saved Luffy from an equally *certain doom* - was there at the time to heal that injured person means nothing!

Sabo's backstory as a noble who hates the caste system fitting perfectly with the reveal that he joined the revolutionaries does nothing for me!

THIS IS NOTHING LESS THAN THE END OF ONE PIECE RANT RANT RANT.

Dude, Sabo is alive, it was foreshadowed quite a bit (and had nothing to do with dragonballs/magic/popularity), and this is the best arc so far. Write your own damn story if you're convinced you know better than the all-time most popular manga artist.

it was already hinted many times that he was alive but i did hope he was dead because now it will turn luffy the person he was before he lost Ace and that is not something i really need to see.

Exactly that guy just seems like a One Piece hater.  Honestly I thought he was dead but I thought of a possibility of him still staying alive.  There were hints already and him coming back makes the story lot better.  I actually see him as Dragon's successor while Luffy being Roger's successor.

it all depends on his explanation for not taking part in the "Marineford War". Maybe he can be redeemed, but I have my doubts. (yeah I don't really like his return, even so it was hinted)

Sabo will serve as a bridge between Luffy and Dragon. I couldn't have asked for more. Not that I like this new Sabo, he's been pretty one-dimensional so far. "I won't let anyone else get the Mera Mera no Mi!" is all he's been saying.

Guys,Oda does not jump the shark:his manga is perfectly planned out.Sure,he may add a minor character here and there (or everywhere),perhaps add some stuffing because he had too few plot points in his mind to make a whole arc (half of Skypia where he only had a scant few very important plot points (the ponyglyph, the ship, maybe enel and the moon people, the skypians, the dials, the money and then he just streched),half of fishman island (he could not make a villain from a Weapon that nobody knows its existence, and so it must remain,a poneglyph,Jinbe,a reason to fight big mom and fisher tiger's (and Koala's)backstory),and Foxy which only served to have an arc in the island they met Aokiji so that he wouldn't fall out of the sky).Everything major he does (ie not regarding minor characters, like mister heroic sacrifice at Alabasta)is calculated, foreshadowed (sometimes by symbolism if nothing else is possible)and planned, and the only thing editors, moneys, fans, kids and other bufons can convince him to do is to pick up the pace or slow down (adding more and more of the afforementioned stuffing and minor characters).I am sure that the foreshadowing for what One Piece is is at the same time overhelming and oversubtle...but we'll only understand it in about 20 years.

Ignorance is a bliss...until you actually understand how many people ,including sometimes yourself, this ignorance destroyed. But,I guess that, when you understant that, you wont be ignorant anymore.

He who does not understand his mistakes, does not learn. He who does not learn, does not grow.He who does not grow,is already dead.

Moderation is the key to virtue.

Everyone claims that he learns from his mistakes, and yet, very few people do.Ah,pride,is it that you are so well hidden from a man's eyes?

To be honest, if Oda brings back Sabo, I'd be TERRIBLY disappointed.

As a plot device, his death brings a tragedy to Luffy's past that gives him more character - I love the man, but let's face, he's not exactly multidimensional.

Having Sabo come back sounds like, "Oh, Luffy's got two dead people in his background, let's make one of them come back". It makes Sabo's story cheap and disposable. I mean, if he didn't die, what did we manly tear over the 10 or so chapters of his arc for?

I get the feeling that this is a total retconn, that Oda brought him to life after the fans decided he was such a great character. The 'three cups' scene, as well as the infamous 'Dragon flashback', were all created AFTER Sabo's arc. Unlike Robin, who had great integration into the story leading up to the Water 7 epic, there's absolutely no hint of Sabo's existence before the Battle of Marinford.

If Oda can be persuaded to do this, what's stopping him from saying 'trololol, Roger's still alive!' How about Bellamere? Tom? Any number of characters who died offscreen? And what would THAT do for the story?

Does anyone remember how epic Gaara's death was in Naruto? And how cheap it became when they threw away a minor character to bring him back? What's stopping this series from resorting to 7 Dragonballs every time a popular character dies?

All evidence now seems to point to the fact that this person coming back is Sabo. I was hoping for Bon Kurei, but given the preponderance of clues, that's looking unlikely. I do hope that Oda throws a swerve, because I for one don't see Sabo's return as anything but a cheapening of the quality of the One Piece series.

If you can find dosco1panda in the manga.... you won't bother comparing op with naruto. in fact, you won't bother predict what oda would do next. Coz he always come up with 10x more crazy idea. logic can eat shit in Oga's world anyway. So, why bother?
