But at the last two pages, directly after the shot of Kousei facing the cheering crowd while saying goodbye to Kaori, we suddenly see Kousei in the snowy streets with a letter from Kaori.

I dont know, i think the author went to a lot trouble to make it seem that she passed on for it not to be a happy ending. Those are my feelings anyway and i hope its like that.

It's a touching chapter, but it's a tragedy anyway. We didn't get to read a happy ending. Cute girls shouldn't'd die! Real life is harsh enough already, I don't want tragedies in my mangas, damn it.

I wish I could say I've actually read "raw" chapter 44, but the one over at senmanga is actually a Korean scanlation, so yeah... can't read Korean. >_> They uploaded the Jaanese one, imma go read it right now. Now that I have actually read chapter 44, I can finally say a few a lot of things other than my comment at the comments page on what I could barely scrape off from the images alone. The chapter itself is mostly about the contents of Kaori's letter, so I thought I'd write down what I have read.

Heading back to when they were 5 at Kousei's first performance, we found out that Kaori was actually taking piano lessons instead and was moved by how colorful his laying was, just as much as Emi was except that she didn't cried out. From that point on, she admired the pianist Arima Kousei. When she found out that Kousei no longer plays the piano, she stopped taking piano lessons and started taking violin lessons instead because she wanted Kousei to continue playing. Time jump to middleschool, she found out that Kousei attends the same school as she does, and ponders on how to approach him. She couldn't, as she felt that there's no space for her to squeeze in between Kousei, Watari, and Tsubaki's group of friends.

As it turns out, Kaori won't last long even if she survived the operation. As a child, Kaori already took several operations and was in and out of the hospital for the majority of her middleschool days. One day, overhearing her parents crying in the hospital waiting room, she found out that she is terminally ill and won't last for long. That became the trigger for Kaori to change from her plain glasses wearing self to the bright and energetic person Kousei will eventually meet so that she will die without regrets.

Then, one day in April, she lied. Kaori doesn't have it in her to directly ask Tsubaki to introduce her to Kousei, because like everone else except Tsubaki and Kousei, she knows about Tsubaki's feelings. So she lied to Tsubaki, saying that she likes Watari and requested her help. This lie is what the title of the manga actually refers to, and it is that very lie that enabled her to meet Kousei. That finally meeting Kousei shows him to be different to her expectations. How much more brooding he was, how much more submissive he was, how lower his voice was, how manlier he was, and just as she expected, how kind he was. She then fondly recalls the memories that they both shared.

She asked Kousei is he thinks she had touched the hearts of others, if she's inside Kousei's heart, will he remember her... because if he forgets, she'll haunt him. She doesn't want a reset, and doesn't want him to forget her because they promised each other. She then confessed her feelings towards Kousei, apologized for not eating all of the sweets he gave her, for hitting him a lot, for how selfish she was.

The letter finally ends with her thanking Kousei. Kousei then says that he was to one who should be thanking her. Oh, and she included in the letter what she considers as her treasure. The picture of her as a child with Kousei just passing by behind her.

The last ten pages are practically just Kousei x Tsubaki shipping, and Kousei saying that Spring without Kaori is coming.

Now for something completely different.

[Four Is Death] trope aside, I really think that the manga had the potential to go on up to Kousei's adulthood so we could see his growth both as a pianist and as a person (Give the kid a break, come on. First, his cat, then his mom, and now...) and it just doesn't feel right to end the manga in such a note.
