I have started reading this, and I get the feeling this has picked up from somewhere else. What comics came before this one, story chronologically speaking.

It hasn't, this is the beginning. It's just one of those ones that jumps right in to a world with pre-existing relationships without explaining too much.(as far as I know.)

there is no prequel. this is the main series.

That is correct, however there is some flashbacks delving into the past life a bit to help somewhat clarify the story a bit.
