The only good thing about this manga is kumagawa, everything else is pure shit.

I just finished it no more than an hour ago and I'd say it's worth the read. (Loved all the external to internal references =D)

Didn't think it would take on such a 'Marmite' position in terms of the fans though...

I'd say it's a nice read if you want something which is, for the most part, brain dead. That is : a shounen, fighting-orientated, over-explanatory manga.
It pulls quite a few nice ideas, the characters are nice. . . Alas, it drags itself way, waaayy too long. Not to mention the enormous fluctuations in the plot, if I dare say there is even one, and the astonishing number of asspulls even for a fantasy-battle-shounen manga. And that says something.
I'd say this is something nice to keep on a to-read-list, on that cold and dreary, rain-filled day when ye have nothing else to read or do.

It gets a lot of the flak, and really, it doesn't start getting truly "exaggerated" until the minus arc, but I love it when a manga series does that. The thing about this series that no one has touched up on is that the story and narrative often deconstructs said stereotypes and exaggerations common to the shounen genre. From a different perspective, deconstruction would be noted to be trolling; Both are true. There is so much fun and kickassery that I couldn't help but fall in love with it. That is not to say that it is without its faults, but Nisio Isin is not one to fall into convention, if anything. That being said, the first couple of arcs, the comedy arc and the class 13 arc can be quite cliche, and not in way of deconstruction either. I say give it a shot because it starts becoming..at least different than usual in volume 8.

There is a lot of exposition in this manga, which is ironically quite conventional for deconstruction in a story, but I happen to enjoy reading a lot of wording in a story. The way the narrative is often structured makes the ton of explanation it has even natural in its formulation.  Even with that, it has a lot of original content too. I suggest Binbougami Ga! too, for it has a similar kind of spirit and feel to it.

WindRaijin, people interpret stories in different ways, and form different opinions accordingly. The thing with this manga is that it gets really over the top, but in a good way (for me).

Well shit. I see why people don't like the manga but there have been ass pulls since the very beginning. You should be used to them or at the very least see then coming. Personally I really liked this manga. Kumagawa was a big part of why I liked it. He is truly a great character in my opinion. One of my all time favorites and he didn't show up until around chapter 50. As for Medaka. She was such a cringe worthy character. I didn't like her at all. She's been like that since the start so if you honestly can't deal with it there's no point in continuing this manga. She stays that way the whole time pretty much which is a feat in and of itself if you ask me.
