I'd heard a lot about Evangelion when I was in high school; friends and classmates talked about how awesome it was.  At the time, I didn't have any access to it, but when I was in college I watched the whole thing...and just didn't like it, even though I wanted to like it.  It's got tons of the things I like: giant robots, action, sci-fi, etc., but I just couldn't really get into it  (I think it was mostly Shinji & his dad I didn't like, but I expect not to like the villain).  I realize some things are just a matter of personal taste, and I'm not trying to rag on it, but since tons of people still really love it, I thought I'd ask to see just what it is about the series--specifically this manga, since I'm here--that really makes them like it so much.  Also, I can't remember much of the plot anymore, so just bear that in mind.  I'm considering picking this one up (from the beginning, somewhere else), so I'd like to see if it's worth another look. :) Thanks for any helpful advice!

I guess for me it's about the madness of each character and the religion story behind Evangelion. The manga and anime tried, but didn't really convey the whole story behind it, you can try and look for an explanation of a whole story online and may be you can come to love it more. While it is true that all you see is how crazy each character is, when you take a closer look, those madness describe quite well the society that we are living in. People are separated from each other with their ego (or A.T field with describes in Evangelion), so they will never truly understand each other, and the aim of the whole Human Instrumental Project is to destroy that wall, bring every soul together. In the world like that, their will be no war, no conflict, no sadness, etc. but well at the same time, no happiness either. For that reason, Shinji want to revert the world back to its original form, while he may be hated and treated badly, but he can feel others. The whole thing seems quite mess up, but the message is really simple, put your ego aside, and try to understand other people around you!

To be honest, at first it's the relationship between Kaworu and Shinji. *Yeah, not a very healthy reason, but it's the truth, don't you blame me*
Then, it's the manga itself. I regret and am glad at a same time that I've read this manga. It messed up my life, the plot is confused somehow, sometimes I even had trouble figure what I was reading. To the point sometimes I thought "I have to follow it until the end, I'm wondering how they end this mind-fuck manga", LOL.

It's confused, but still good.

And 5 stars for Maelis's comment. I love you.

It's unique. Sure it has everything that other series do (dying MCs, robots, apocalypse, mental issues, gore, conspiracies, this and that....), but NGE isn't doing all that for the sake of doing it. It all feels... natural... none of it feels forced, rather it feels like an actual development.

Then you have the "not so happy ending", in fact, it's not even bittersweet, it's flat out depressive and negative, and that's why I like it so damn much, because it is not sunshine and rainbows. It's brutal, unforgiving, and crushing.

When I go look up some images of NGE on Google, and I see fanart where the characters are happy and smiling, it... it kind of breaks my heart, because I know they'll never be happy. And when you can feel for the characters strongly and for so long, FICTIONAL characters, it's a sign the show is doing it right.

NGE's take on a child pilot in a total horrific mess... find me a child that wouldn't break, scream and start crying or go into a shock in the situations these characters are (Shinji especially gets hated by viewers because of that, I would like to see them try... bnch of idts n scmbgs....). Basicaly, NGE's take on mental strain feels very lifelike.

Oh and, Asuka.

I'm not even sure why I not only started, but also finished the series or how I came to like it so much. It's not because of the 'mecha' aesthetic (which isn't even really true, because the EVAs aren't mecha at all). For most of the anime I hated almost every character with a vengeance, especially Shinji. But if you look beyond the fact that none of the characters act like you would expect anime protagonists to behave, you realize that especially the anime is deeply psychological and philosophical. Especially the last episodes are basically just an exploration of Shinji's trauma and psyche and it's so unsettling at times, because it doesn't feel fabricated at all.

Then of course there are more distinct reasons for liking it, for example comparing the differences and similarities between anime/manga/movie, but when it comes down to it I'd say the way especially the anime deals with the themes of human mind/social interaction are what really drew me in.
(Imagine my horror when I realized that I was not only starting to sympathize but also starting to like Shinji :'D)
