Petrichor is not "dirt". It's a name some scientists made up for a paper in which they investigated the origin of that distinct smell that occurs the first time you've had rain in a while. I guess they didn't want to type "thay smell after the first rain in a while" over and over so they called the smell petrichor.

Dirt is not even required to be present for the scent to be produced.
