Could someone please explain the ending for me? It seems like the main character "died" as a climber as he lost most of his toes and some of his fingers. However, one page shows him falling with the words next to him saying he died, but a few pages later he is grinning after a panel of his wife and child. So did he entirely die or is he simply unable to climb most walls now?

Your question on whether he's alive or not is stated on the bottom of the page. And the page where 'THE IMMORTAL KATOU BUNTAROU DIED.' is a metaphor as in the Mori who loves mountains, would traverse 8000+ Meters mountains alone, reached the peaks on all of them and survives to tell the tales is no more, now he's just a loving husband and father of a daughter as well as an unborn child. Although the last panels seems like he's still climbing that small mountain, his days of ice-climbing has ended
