So apparently there's 9 volumes of the LNs but we've only heard spoilers up to the 8th, does anyone know what happens there?

 Basically in volume 7 of the LN Ikta and Yatori find themselves on opposite sides of the war.  Ikta is part of the rebel army lead by the princess and Yatori leads the army of Igsem.  Her father tells her to kill Ikta which shocks her greatly.  At this point she "steels" her mind by severing all her connections of individuality as Yatori and becomes a mindless blade of Igsem which her family has been raising her for.  Eventually they fight face to face but Ikta sets up snipers so that he can defeat Yatori without killing her since he knows once Igsem blade is defeated it loses its invincibility.  (he was trying to create a checkmate situation without actually following through and taking the king).  Unknown to him though was that the snipers were actually commanded by the "evil mastermind" of the series and they were actually sent to kill him and Yatori at the same time.  Yatori sees this and jumps in front of Ikta and absorbs all the bullets.  During her dying breath she reverts from Igsem "steel" Yatori to her actual individual self.  She thanks Ikta for always being there for her and joining the military even though he never wanted to.  She also gives him her swords to use as he wishes.  Also Yatori wants Ikta to promise that he'll see the princess as a normal girl instead of royalty (probably the wrong person to ask since he's already broken 4 promises.  Not protecting Yatori was his 4th broken promise).  After this Ikta collapses in depression since all the people he loved has died to war.  The Igsem army withdraws after Yatori's defeat and the "evil mastermind" talks to the princess about usurping the thrown from the empire.  At first the princess rebukes him but then he tells her that "isn't this what you wanted? Ikta alive and Yatori dead?".  When he says this dark feelings arise in her and she agrees with his plans for her to become the next emperor.  Later in the night she visits the emperor's bedchamber and kills the emperor with the knife.  She is then appointed as the next emperor and becomes a ruthless tyrant.  In volume 8 the scene shifts to two years after the princess took power.  It tells about how the princess now emperor easily quells any rebellions and will not take even the slightest insubordination from those under her command.  Also she is keeping Ikta all to herself for the past two years and refuses for anyone else to ever see him.  Later in the volume she visits Ikta who has been a vacant shell of himself for the past two years.  She laments that Ikta only had eyes for Yatori and not her while trying to justify her actions by saying she had low political standing and was very young so this was the only way for her to get in power quickly and "fix" the nation.  The only ray of hope for Yatori fans is that Ikta ordered for her to be encased in ice by the spirits so I guess there is chance for her to be revived by some supernatural occurrence.  This story has spirits and stuff so I don't think it quite out of the realm out of possibility.  This is just a condensed summary of what happened if you care to read more head over the auxiliary forums at bakatsuki.

wow I was expecting some of this but damn, the story is really good, hope for the manga to not be a promotional one ...

actually, the "loli" is pretty well-developped and same age as Ikta

Hmm I didn't claim her to be a loli now did I? I just said that our exotic beauty is a little young for Ikta's tastes...which as we all know is either MILF or GTFO. Though I reckon a special exception may be made for his fiery redhead.

god, I swear that resurrection is last thing that I want to see in this series. I mean c'mon, have a person to do something like that just because they fall hard for someone to the point they can't let them go? I always see this type character in anime, movies, or stories. type character like that is someone that can't move on.. no they DON'T want to move on. they are type that like cling to past and don't want to face reality or future. that type is the type make me pissed most. I swear, if someone like that in real world l will punch them in face and beat some sense to them. hah.. I hope author not spoil reader and make dead character stay dead. I better see everyone dead rather than see a resurrection.

wanting someone back from the dead isn't nonsense. if you think so, tell that to someone who lost a person in their life whether to disease, accidents or acts of violence especially the loved ones of someone who died young. you want to punch them in the face when you don't even understand their pain. 

Can we all focus on the important matter of whether or not Ikta can work his swag on the exotic beauty? I mean sure a little young for his tastes, but she won't stay young forever!

Reiterating what others have already said, basically because it's a Holy War. The idea of a Holy War isn't supposed to be kept a secret nor engaged as a tiny guerrilla skirmish, it's to be bold, out in the open. They want to be recognized as a force of justice and to that they must be in the spotlight. Hiding under the cover of darkness will do little to further their cause.

Because it's idiotic and short-sighted in the extreme to bet it all on a single blow that will tar you as bloodthirsty, untrustworthy and dishonorable in the eyes of anyone else in the world. Congratulations, you killed a load of people. Now what are you going to do when the teeny tiny amount of forces you killed are responded to by the genocide of your people, because the public finds it easy to dehumanize and regard you as monsters? When your initial escalation and breakdown of etiquette is responded to in the same way by a vastly larger world around you? Escalating when your opponent is already far greater in scope and potential tactics is just ... dumb as hell.

War crimes exist for a reason, and even in battle honor has a place. It's so things don't escalate indefinitely, that a war for certain reasons doesn't turn into a war of extinction. The one who apparently knows nothing of warfare is you.

Heck, she's already pushing it too far by launching a surprise attack, as she did. It detracts from the message of morality and sanctity she tried to send later in her proclamation (that their actions are taken in response to the Empire's own actions, that it's a 'holy' war), which is about the only way her tribe could have won against a vastly superior empire - by removing the will of the people to fight against them.

Well, didn't they do exactly that, sneak attack them and killed their best commander when they were comfortable and unprepared? The proclamation makes sense once it has come to a face to afce battle. As far as it seems, the tribes want to make clear that they are fighting for a good, noble and just cause. Even if the message was directed at the soldiers, it must be for internal propaganda too.

next chapter, you should start to see a lot of agony about the meaning of what "is"

peace where they couldnt trade and their resources robbed from them from a guy who think its a game.....

the proclamation happened because they have already been exposed to have triggered an attack, they were planning on trapping their pursuers and that failed due to yatori spotting the trap.

also i think this would have been much harder to pull off at night, especially since you dont want to use lighting since it gives away your position
