It seems kind of ridiculous someone could just be created with such insane powers as Miyuki. Why wouldn't they just start constantly genetically engineering ridiculous members of their family, then? Is she seriously 100% unrelated to him, not even like the egg of their mother being genetically modified? Honestly, it'd be a little bit sad if she was actually completely unrelated, after all is said and done, with the kinds of feelings she's been carrying around the whole time. I don't really like how this bodes for her feelings though. It's sweet how much she cares about him, but I'd hate to think she was genetically hardwired to be that way towards him. It'd literally be like two robots programmed to 'love' each other. 

 

Similarly, I'm kind of curious if the Yotsuba intended for her to actually get with him, since they seemed to have gone through so much trouble? I mean they are pretty openly defined as siblings, so you'd think the world around them would grimace if they openly became a couple.

Well... the "official" reasons stated (for Tatsuya's Mental Interference surgery + relation to Miyuki) isn't really true. The "truth" was recently revealed about a volume or two ago in the LN.

The Yotsuba knew exactly what potential Tatsuya had the moment he was born. Before his birth, all members of the Yotsuba were hoping for a "savior" that could protect their clan from terrorists or other outside groups due to the tragedy of Maya and the consequent war/death of Yotsuba members.

 

As if to answer their call, Tatsuya was born with two godly innate magic - Decomposition and Reconstruction. Members of the Yotsuba debated whether this power was too strong to continue to exist, as a simple whim could easily wipe out an entire country. However, they weren't able to just throw away something that literally embodied their wish. Thus, they decided to put two limiters on his behavior/power.

 

1) Magic Calculation Surgery

-What this essentially did was remove all strong urges from Tatsuya (as stated) so that he will not massacre people or obliterate countries on a whim. They (the upper echelons of Yotsuba, at least) treated him coldly, so that he matures faster and understands the gravity of the world faster. 

 

2) The Yotsuba "created" Miyuki

- She was genetically engineered from birth to be the perfect fit for Tatsuya. To be his "limiter." Her peerless beauty is also attributed to this genetic modification, as is her superior magic powers - especially in the area of mental interference. She would be the only emotional connection to Tatsuya so that he will always protect the Yotsuba.

 

On a side note, because of this genetic engineering, there would be no problem if she were to have children with Tatsuya, as she was made to be his from the beginning.

Well, there is a REASON that they consider him a failure...

He was born with his "overwriting the Eidos" ability that "overwrote" all of his other magic capabilities. From birth, he would never be able to do any magic besides derivatives of that. At the time, those branches of magic weren't well explored (as they are generally considered too complicated for people to do, and are weak on top of that). Meaning, he could use his Gram dispersion(? not 100% on the name) which main benefit is to destroy other people's magic before it can activate or during activation, but there's already technology that can do that WITHOUT a magician needed. Cast jamming. 

 

Other types of "overwriting" abilities require serious processing power. You have to fully understand the spell/person/object you're casting on and rewrite it.  It's a lot of information to take in, and is part of what makes Tatsuya seems so much like a machine at times.

 

Also consider, he JUST LEARNED this "healing" (actually rewinding the eidos) ability.  Meaning before today, he had slightly above average combat abilities for a 12 yr old, but very little in magic abilities. Yes, he can detect magic and react to it quickly, yes he has a self-healing function, but his other magic is pretty below average.   Now, the reason he can use other magic at all is because of the tinkering they did with his brain.  It can even be argued that WITHOUT the tinkering they did, he would be almost useless.  He wouldn't have the processing power that makes his other abilities usable. 

 

TL;DR

Tatsuya's other magics are weakened because of this one overpowering one. But the Yotsuba clan is very extreme... and in order for a child to be considered "adequate" they have to be better at everyone in everything, especially magic.   Miyuki is beautiful, has powerful magic, is extremely intelligent, etc.  Tatsuya's looks are average, very low amount of mana(or whatever they call it), his other magic (besides his main) is generally weak, in spite of their attempts to "correct" that flaw.  You can consider it that they went to all of that extra effort to make him usable, but he failed to live up to their expectations, whereas Miyuki was born exceptional and raised to be their idea of perfect (too bad for them she became a bro-con).

 

Tatsuya was born able to use ONE type of magic. After tinkering he was still only good at ONE type of magic, he just became able to do other magics to some extent, not enough to be considered truly strong at them. To the Yotsuba, that's failure.  His unstoppable killing/healing came long after the had decided he was a failure. How old is he now? 12? Yeah, they decided he was a failure at 5 or 6, I think. So... it's hard to change the way people think.  Also, this incident is what will ultimately change their thoughts about him into someone to be "watched and controlled" through Miyuki.  They continue to treat him as a failure because they can't change their stance on him (as that would show weakness), but they are fully aware of how unstoppable he is, which is why Miyuki has a lot more support than she would on her own, they're simply afraid of what Tatsuya would do.

To be honest, I really enjoyed MKnR and I kinda hoped that MKnR/TH would show us Tatsuya before he became unstopable overpowered monster, but sadly thats not the case. Even though Tatsuya is much younger, he is still OP as fuck...  (everything is solved by him too easily, no tension is so boring)

You talk like there aren't more stories out there that develop like this, for example, Full Metal Panic, Kyoukaisen or Full Metal Alchemist. And I'm quite right with your post, but what it ruins this story for me it's precisely it hasn't anything but situations solved because the mc is omnipotent and that's all. At least Sousuke had to struggle really hard and evolved, Toori is a fun character and also has his hard parts, Tatsuya just does everything well, and that's all.

 

I admit I came to read the manga after watching the anime, which was boring for me, so it's true I'm biased but it's essentaly the same story, I don't know how things are in the LN, but the 3 parts of the anime were dealt the same way. I liked the terrorist part but the other 2 just copied the first and it really didn't happen anything with the characters. Maybe Mikihiko was somehow developed, but not so much. I expected some develop at least on Miyuki side, but she didn't do anything but being cute and love oni-sama to death.

 

It's not like I hate this story, like I said, it has interesting sides and you pointed them. But after watching the anime and reading the mangas I found it dissapointing on how it is dealt.This part wasn't in the anime and is the one I have enjoyed the most, there is a character progression apart of a story being told.

 

I think you need to broad your readings in general if you think of this story as an "adult" one.

That's just your own subjective opinion, and do I detect a little bit of a jaded stance against this type of storytelling format perhaps? I won't explain what the person you quoted, quoted me on, because if you don't get what I meant by it back then, then it's more than likely you wouldn't agree even if I explained it deeper.

But I'll tell you this much: MKnR/Y are intellectually engaging because of their many different aspects to the stories being told. This is not a game where there's a seriously overpowered hero and you're stuck with the loser hero that can't win no matter what and thus causing frustration - this is a story with many, and I mean MANY, different elements to consider, explore and enjoy. It's not copying any well-known format, which is refreshing, and if you let the fact that the hero wins the battles ruin the story for you, then suit yourself.

I stick by what I said, I love MKnR/Y. And it's doing the story unjustice when you ignore everything else but one part. There's the tragedy of his life story, the excitement to find out what kind of abilities he may still be hiding and how far they will take him and his sister - and all the others he's met in MKnR. There's also the interesting backgrounds for the other characters, as well as the ongoing power struggle between those ten families. What will happen to the siblings when they graduate? Will the Yotsuba family, including their aunt, accept Miyuki as the successor?

I can create a huge wall of text by simply bringing up the engaging elements in MKnR/Y, but I guess that won't change your perception... I'm not upset, I'm just disappointed about the fact that I probably can't persuade you and all the rest of the naysayers. This is the last comment I'll make for this story though, so react to it as you will - but please don't spread hatred.

Oh, and as for progression, there's just not any progression with the protagonist's powers other than the new things he pulls out and how his abilities are being implemented. But that just means there's much more focus on the story progression rather than the power progression - which I personally prefer.

I don't think the problem lies in the plot armor itself, but in how said plot armor is implemented. Many MCs have plot armor, but it's generally implemented through pure luck, good story planning or various outside help/divine interventions. I don't think anyone ever complained because Harry Potter or Luke Skywalker had a plot armor.

Page 2-tatsuya suddenly gets old. Page 3-he goes back to being young again. I'm not saying the art is bad, but the consistency could be better. Not to mention that Tatsuya should still look a lot younger than he does.

And someone tell the artist to stop with the naked 10 year old girl. Seriously, child Miyuki had an entire page with all panels of her naked(again) while describing how his magic worked. The sexy older lady with a hot bod got one tiny panel. It's a conspiracy to awaken everyone as lolicons and I refuse to fall victim to it!

Also, am I the only one who thinks that the 'thigh gap' between their legs is way too big? It looks jarringly unnatural.

I don't think the problem lies in the plot armor itself, but in how said plot armor is implemented. Many MCs have plot armor, but it's generally implemented through pure luck, good story planning or various outside help/divine interventions.
