Description: Nishimi Kaoru has moved from city to city and school to school because of his father’s job. So the first day at his new school was just routine for him. Being intellectual and the new transfer student, he has always been seen as an outcast and all Kaoru had to do was bear it until the next time he moved. But things were slightly different this time. First, he started to get close to the class president, Mukae Ritsuko, and, secondly, unlikely as it seemed, grew closer to Kawabuchi Sentaro. Sentaro was infamous for getting into fights, skipping class and was an overall bad boy. Strangely enough, the three of them find common ground in music, namely jazz, and Kaoru finds himself actually enjoying the new town.

It won the 57th Shogakukan Manga Award for general manga.

Volumes 1-6 contain unrelated oneshot extras at the end.

I really like this manga because the characters are believable and it doesn´t have any filler chapters.
If someone likes to read romance manga that isn´t full of cliches then you have to read this manga!
Thank you very much for the extra chapters!

I've missed the characters so much. It's like I've really grown attached to them and all of them are precious! The last extra is pure gold. My heart couldn't contain all the feelings, I literally couldn't stop grinning! Gah! I really wish there would be more...
omfg i wonder how many times i cried ;^;
I skipped from chapter 20 directly to the end because I couldn't stand how much drama there was. I loveeee this manga. I think I'll start crying now.
I started and read the entirety of this series today. I couldn't stop. I kept pushing through this series' unbelievably realistic drama begging for a happy ending, and even though it held out on me to the very end, I got one. This series was my happy new year. Thank you.
Sukikatte,

Thanks so much for these "bonus tracks." Since reading the first 45 chapters, it leaped to onto the list of my five favorite manga. The bonus tracks were a great icing on the cake, and kept the delicacy and great story of the original. It also got me to rediscover a lot of good jazz (which was good for amazon.com, as I bought a bunch of Bill Evans, Art Blakey, and three recordings of "Lullaby in Birdland). Thanks to the mangaka and the scanlators for a great ride.
The newest volume is so damn beautiful. I have been given one of the best post-Christmas gifts ever. It is wonderful to know that I have finished 2012, a great year for both translated manga and anime, with one of the greatest Josei mangas of all time. I have said it once, and I will say it again, Kodama-Sensei is a genius, pure and simple. She has some of the best dialogue, plot, and character development I have ever seen in a manga. Thank you Kid Congo and Sukikatte scans for bringing us the latest volume of "Sakamichi no Apollon". The fans, including myself, truly appreciate it.
Wow! This goes in my favourites list. Thanks go to Comadrin for pushing me to read it.
theroadstopshere, I love the picture you're talking about, but what sticks in my mind is last chapter p. 37

That image grabs my heart and won't let go.
Kodama Sensei promised another volume devoted to side characters. I'm so hoping that happens! I'll keep this in my follows for awhile, just in case. 💒🌅
It's scary what kids think is "HISTORICAL" nowadays.

Historical Tag removed, as this is obviously not.
superb, along with the ending, which is really rare nowadays
makes me glad that i devoted time to read it, and not just kill time
especially considering i read really bad manga yesterday
I fell in love with the josei genre after reading NANA. And after reading the comments for this one, I am looking forward to this one.
By far one of the best manga I have ever read, the way in which friendship and Bon's feelings are expressed is so subtle and yet so powerful and meaningful. You know a manga is good when you think about it a lot after you've finished reading it, and this manga is one of them.
Really impressive manga. I started it when it was about halfway completed here on the site, and was surprised and pleased at the speed the updates came out. Huge thanks to the scanlation group for their tremendous effort. I liked the way the main and major supporting characters could butt heads without turning into scumbags and doing something unforgivable. Good story, great characters, and incredible research by the author into the mores and cultural atmosphere of 1960's Japan. The psychology of the characters actions was really good also, as people did things you didn't want them to do, but did not really act out of character (something that really annoys me about a lot of dramatic manga and novels). I have to consider this series a real classic.
I...wow. That was really good. I wasn't expecting it to be this fantastic. It's really, really great!

Much love and thanks to the author first for creating this great work and to the person/group who translated this out.
I can really see why this manga has an award :D. I love the art too, It's simple and unique :D. Even though It has finished I will still have this in my follows and sometimes read it again :D
The end is the best. I like it how the author don't made bon and sentarou meet after separated.
it's just feels so natural that it's going to end like this. Absolutely love this manga :)
feels like I've seen this in a drama somewhere before, I'm not saying it's ripping anything off, cause no doubt stories like this happened in real life (the world is small no matter how big it seems). Ah damn, what's I'm trying to say is read it, although it might turn off younger viewers since some of the nostalgia is lost (since they don't have the experience in life yet). If you are young, save this for a few more years, cause this series is a classic that you can appreciate more once you are a little older
leokiko: the one at the counter was that student that sometimes plays with them jazz
I'm feeling a little smug, since I "called it" 4 weeks ago. Actually, it had a far better conclusion than I anticipated. Very satisfying!
Hope the final volume doesn't have a different title.
Trying...not...to cry...*sob*
AMAZING.
