Asked Google about it, and it came up with an old German training rifle shaped like a K98, but in .22 LR. Not a very in depth search mind you, but it seems to fit, small caliber training rifle equating to someone good with dealing with small kids. It also showed another one shaped like an M1 Carbine, also in .22 LR, also with the ERMA name. The other thing that came up in the search was a fairly modern looking bolt action sniper rifle that looked similar to an Accuracy International rifle, at least in basic profile, but I sort of doubt that is the ERMA the author was using.
