I know what you mean. I read this about 8 years ago. I feel so damned old.
The main character is unbelievably stupid, it's outside the scope of my understanding how you can study the same material for 2+ years and not learn anything.
Hammerspace was still popular at the time, so you'll see tons of him blasting off into the sky like Team Rocket.
I certainly can't say I totally dislike it, but the weak main character along with the heavy reliance on slapstick can't really make it a classic for me.
