Just goes to prove that kid really respect and acknowledge Mills' shapeshifting ability. I mean, it could be very well that the reason why that kid on the last page now suddenly shows interest in Mimicry to the point he asked Mills to teach him, is so sometimes he can be the one to substitute for the Ball.
Kinda amazing how this one-shot can be both filled with underlying Positive and Negative tone.
This respect and acknowledgement is compounded when the popular kid asks Mills to help him so that if the same situation happens again HE can be the ball.
On the contrary, i find this getting more heart-warming the more i read into it.
In a world where there are school that taught students to literally became a mere object and praise them for it, the fact that the other kids instantly thought Mills is volunteering to be the Soccer Ball when he asked to join the play actually shows that they respect and acknowledge Mills as the best in their class.
That was fucking hilarious.
Except Evangalion was meant to be dark, and purposefully multi-layered, and full of explicit symbolism.
Whereas this can be really dark if you read a lot into it, but doesn't need to be. All I got from it was that the author had a slightly black sense of humour.
I don't really think this is dark, just your usual children's innocent cruelty.
Cute and sweet-looking, and then I got to the "wham page". Dark for a children's story indeed, like the really old versions of fairy tales.
