I have a question.
Kids in 'todays' manga, excluding Rainbow, Alice in Hell, Inai Machi, Cerberus, Mr Kwon, and the multitude of other manga in which children are beaten, murdered, or otherwise assaulted. See Also, Tsugumomo.

Nube serialization started in 1994 though.
Popular/successful/profitable mangas enjoy a snowball effect. The longer a series runs, the harder it is for the publisher to axe/end it. The most obvious example would be Berserk.

Manga standards sure have changed. Kids in today's manga would never be put through this kind of danger, let alone having youkai being Disney-ified to such an extent. (Objects turn into GOOD tsukumogami if they're treated well. If they're not, they turn into BAD tsukumogami and are outright evil.)
