The best way to read this is to read it together with Terminal Lance.
This is actually pretty awesome. I wasn't a marine, but I was a paratrooper, and there are a bunch of parallels between USMC bootcamp and U.S. Army Basic Training. Brings back a bunch of memories I thought I had forgotten about basic. Can't wait to read more.
On another note, damn marines get all the glory in the media lol.

There's also an in to gain citizenship by serving in the US military. It's not as common as back in the draft days but it still exists in some form. You may need to be a "resident" then enlist or join ROTC to commission but it's basically the same as any federal hire of a foreign national on the surface. Then when in, you and your dependents get fast-tracked citizenship.
So I've known officers from the Caribbean and enlisted from Nigeria who got citizenship assured by serving.

Over my side, food in public schools are handled by independent stalls. So it's not bad ;p.
