Possibly.... the war hasn't even started yet in this manga, historically correct or otherwise.

One phrase that can be more devastating than any other. Not that I mind it exactly, as long as the MC starts character growth fast enough.

If a bunch of students get slaughtered like the description says, shouldn't this be tragedy genre?

what's wrong with being a beta though? the modern society is built by beta's invention. survival of the fittest doesn't mean alpha is better, it's actually beta who survive.

Because "some" betas are easily manipulated into violent acts by less scrupulous alphas.

The idea that betas usually/always survive is simply by virtue of sheer number and Hollywood. All those nameless/faceless characters in war movies/mangas/stories? Most of them are betas. People see battle hardened soldiers come home and assume 'that guy must have been an alpha from the very beginning to have made it back', when in fact some of them are just betas turned alphas.

Well, at least they fought like real men although they already had rifles (not like that coward Napoleon that hid behind his cannons and muskets). Nowadays "warfare" isn't war anymore but an all-out slaughter&destroy, while real war always had two armies meet on a battlefield and fight there, usually not involving the normal population into fights.

Those who use guns, explosives, abc-weaponry, modern artillary and war machinery are all cowards and don't deserve to be left alive in my opinion, since these weapons have only one target: to kill the unarmed population of a country from a distance, which is dastardly and perfidious as well as inhumane and unrighteous. I hope electromagnetic warfare comes out soon(and is used against the warmonger USA) to end that century of "unwar" and come back to a humane war like in ancient and medieval times.

Can't tell if this is serious or not since it would display a massive misunderstanding of the way wars were fought in the past, why they were fought, who actually did the dying, and the effect it had on populations. If it were a serious post it would also illustrate a narrow minded perspective on some of the major reasons for technological advancement related to warfare as well as the way that a good portion of the modern technology functions. If its not a serious post its kinda a little too enthusiastic.

Then he'd better turn alpha soon. Sengoku combat is definitely an alpha thing. It's one thing to portray beta males as excelling in survival situations against nature or unthinking zombies, but you gotta be an alpha to survive in the sengoku era. Betas get a spear, a hat, and maybe basic armor if lucky, then sent straight to the grinder.

Strangely enough, studies run on US combat personnel over the past 12 years of constant ground warfare actually show that beta males are more suited for modern day combat than alphas and, even stranger, better suited to be officers. Betas are easier to train to do basic modern combat tactics such as taking cover to fight from reinforced positions or simply to self-audit resource usage. You know, things like magazine retention, counting how many bullets you still have, and basic things like having a good idea how long your food, water, and batteries will last. Traditional beta males also handle stress better and cope better with situations outside their control. It's probably carryover fatalism from day-to-day life, but in the modern battlefield it definitely helps. When they become officers these traits make them more effective because the tasks of modern-day officers revolve mostly around administration and logistics.

 

That is not to say alphas are not suited to combat. Alphas are great medal recipients because alpha males tend to take more risks. SOF personnel also exhibit strong alpha traits. At the same time, it also means alphas are more likely to be killed off. More interestingly, alphas are today considered unsuited to jobs in the military that we would traditionally assign to people with this kind of personality makeup, such as piloting combat aircraft, but this is now thought to be more an indication of how complex and automated modern combat - and combat aircraft - have become. 

 

The going theory of why this is is that alpha males in human society have evolved traits that allow them to dominate human social interactions, including traditional close combat. People fighting with swords and spears actually experience direct social interaction with their opponents in that they get up close and personal, allowing them to express their basic personality traits and project it directly at their opponent while crossing blades. We actually get to see this a lot in modern day martial arts too. Having an alpha personality helps people dominate martial arts competitions. The problem is that when both sides are shooting at each other with high-powered rifles at 200 yards, none of that matters. Alphas trying to project their dominating traits such as bravado and self exposition are more likely to get picked off by a bullet. Being dominating in social situations is not useful in a mechanized, industrialized battlefield, and it's going to get worse as unmanned combat platforms are increasingly used.

Guys, I was 100% joking. I have no idea why the series is named that, and he's not that beta of a guy. Pretty average dude, all-in-all. I'm sure he'll do well in the Sengoku era, simply because he is a top-notch archer and knows a decent amount about it. That's what the series is about, after all.

What's wrong with being a beta? Well, nothing really, if you WANT to be one. I hate seeing the main character as a total beta though, as it's annoying as hell.

That kind of character, especially when he's the mc, really annoys me, I'm hoping that he gets substancial character development soon.
