You guys are discussing wars whilenpointing particular examples and counter examples.. but just like all philosophical debates, there's no one answer.

But let's put it this way. If America didn't waste so much money on military we might not be chatting today because they may not yet have felt the need to kickstart or publicize Internet

Might needed a few more decades or century~

The United Nations wouldn't exist right now if there were no world wars and plenty of people have been influenced by UNO regardless of whether it is war related or not. Heck, if the empires didn't go at each other like they did, the world would be a different place now. The Powerful empires would still be having all those resources that were lost in the war effort and America plus Germany and Japan might not have become like they did. Of course, war would have been inevitable no matter what the circumstances. Even if Germany wasn't the central figure, some other empire would have become that way and it would've had its own version of Hitler. Hitler was influenced by WW1 after all. If WW1 was different and Germany didn't get the short end of the stick at the end of it, then there would be no "Hitler the Dictator". That's how the logic works. The workings of war are more complex than most pacifistic principles teach the general populace.

Pacifists want people to be pecifists (at least those that preach on about it), so the omit the benificial side of wars. Also, if WW1 had gone diffferently, instead of Hitler the dictator, we'd have John, or Jacques the dictator. Because it's pretty damn likely, that if someone else loses, that side would have been angry (wonder why *sidewhistle*), and would have been easy to excite into a war.

Those changes don't necessarily all occur during a war, but the periods right before or right after a war wouldn't be the same without the war.

Yes but war advances these by many more times the average amount. Research receives more funding out of desperation and such and taxes are increased using the excuse that "you need to do your duty to your country in times of war" and those taxes are put into the war effort and to increase the chances of winning the war via medicine, machinery, faster food production, more efficient training etc. You should research more on this. Some good examples are aerial and rocket advancement. At the start of WW 1, planes were at a very low state, then came into use and got more and more development put in since ground and sea warfare wasn't enough. Thus by WW2 aerial combat came into its zenith, with zeppelins, bombers, air-carriers, fighters etc. most of which didn't exist or rather were never usable for combat prior to the wars. Same with rockets, the only reason they advanced to the point of sending into space, was because they were excellent weapons of war since they could be controlled and sent from great distances. The governments of the world raced to develop them so as to one-up the opponents if war arose again.

Do you really think the population would have increased from 1 billion to 7 billion from 1800 to 2011 if we just went at the usual pace of competition? No, its war that accelerates competition rate but its true that war is merely the result of competition. If there was no competition, there would be no war or violence. I could also bring the crusades into this but that would drag this on longer and crusades didn't raise the population as much as WWs did. Don't get me wrong, its not the fighting that caused it, its what fueled the fighting and need to win the fight that spawned all this development. People start thinking harder when in desperate situations after all, and the government gives more support to these parties if they think they can benefit from them.

While it is true that the desperation of war increases competition and therefore technological progress the way you described, the sudden population growth after the two World Wars resulted from a different mechanic. That is, the abolition of the imperial states. A lot of the population growth actually appeared in nations formerly subject to a colonial empire that restricted trade and distribution of such basic needs as medicine and medical services. In many cases this is because the imperial rulers needed to do so deliberately in order to maintain their position at the top of the empire, having learned from the mistakes of the older European empires (in most of which the founding nations were supplanted by newcomers invited into the system). In the mid-19th century, for instance, there was real risk that the British Empire would face replacement of the British ruling class by the more numerous and increasingly wealthy Indian upper class. In response, the British launched many prohibitions on the Indian colonies that destroyed the new wealth of the Indians and reduced the subcontinent's population to extreme poverty. The two World Wars weakened the imperial powers significantly and forced them to grant independence to their colonies. This freed up resources, removed artificial prohibitions, and allowed more people to enjoy what was hitherto the privilege of Europe.

It is easy to imagine that a war concluded with the opposite paradigm - that of successful conquest of weaker states into subjects of an imperial state - could have resulted in population decline. In fact, such a war had happened with exactly those consequences in the 13th century. Under Genghis Khan, the Mongols decimated the Central Asian population and caused a population decline that only reversed at the end of the 14th century due to the destruction of infrastructure and millennia-old irrigation systems out of ignorance.

Another kind of war in the 16th and 17th century in mainland Europe, disguising itself as a religious war between Catholics and Protestants also had the same effect. This was the free-for-all chaotic competition between small states with no goal in sight outside the immediate one of defending its own existence. The result was a sudden drop in the population of Europe and a real scarcity of basic necessities due to the destruction of farmlands and the livelihood of people.

In short, while it is true that wars may increase competition and cause technology to flourish, it is not true at all that wars have an automatic benefit in the form of population growth. The primary requirement for this to be true is that the war MUST release resources formerly held by a small, powerful minority, and make it available to the masses. When Alexander melted and coined the hundreds of tons of gold stored in the dungeons of Persepolis, he started a Mediterranean Golden Age. When Tamerlane ransacked the great cities of Central Asia and dragged their best and brightest to Samarkand, he plunged the entire region into a dark age.

but lets not ignore the main stars here, research and development and money. even if there were no wars and no violence we would all be scrambling to be better than everyone else paying to develop more amazing things due to the competitive nature we all have.

I don't know...kinda refuting history there. Many of our best technological advancements were done for or originally sourced in the military. And population? I suppose the baby boomers don't exist. Those changes don't necessarily all occur during a war, but the periods right before or right after a war wouldn't be the same without the war.

While there's a similar premise, this is pretty different from Maoyuu in terms of theme. Maoyuu is more of a social/economic/political commentary with fantasy trappings. Sekai Maou is uses some of those things as gags, but mostly doesn't go into it very deeply. It's really more lighthearted.

To be honest though, if you have read Maoyuu Maou Yuusha, you will learn that even in such a scenario, its money and power that will still reign. War will be of profit to the wealthy and suffering for the poor. If you haven't read it, I suggest you do. Its actually very detailed and accurate in its representation and the bottom line is that no one in power actually wants the war to end since that would bring about loss in wealth and infighting and having to go back to smaller means of obtaining power and riches.

Even the demons couldn't be a bigger threat to humanity than this insane world order where money rules over everything!!!

War will be of profit to the wealthy and suffering for the poor. If you haven't read it, I suggest you do. Its actually very detailed and accurate in its representation and the bottom line is that no one in power actually wants the war to end since that would bring about loss in wealth and infighting and having to go back to smaller means of obtaining power and riches.

They all kind of fit the bill... No conformation of any magic used in their activities, but you can't say it's impossible.

Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great don't really fit that image, though. By the way, the Roman Empire became more focused on conquering with the advent of the "Augusti", the new monarchs of Rome, from 24 BC onwards (Ceasar died 20 years before, 44 BC).

On another note, Napoleon Bonaparte wasn't added to this List, although he was one of the most devilish Conquerors (he plundered not only cities but also the churches which is why there's so much "Beutekunst" in musees like the Louvre, the French never really cared to give it back although they lost the war in the end) because he dared to defy god and religion big times.

Hitler, on the other side, wasn't as bad as people tend to make him. Of course he was an absolute leader that caused the death of many people, but the way they died wasn't cruel, at least of those whom we know of how they died (the KZs and the people who died "there" were never scientifically researched on so all we hear about burning, gasing, shooting, etc. are just speculation and propaganda until it is scientifically [genetic, isotopic,anthropologic,archaeologic,forensic researches all need to be done] proven otherwise).

The only thing that was "politically incorrect" was the eugenics, which lead to some deaths and sterilizations among Germanys population, but that was kind of "in" in many countries at that time and later on, and noone's blaming the other countries rulers like that (Germany even gave up on the invention of the atomic bomb and didn't use its chemical weaponry while other countries like the United Kingdom didn't even blink an eye to use C-weaponry on what they called "underdeveloped, primitive countries").

The real demon lords, by the way, live nowadays, all elected by their citizens, on the whole globe, like in the USA, France, Germany, Spain,Brasil, the UK, the DRK, Sudan,Israel,etc. and they are rising in many countries of the Near East. They preach capitalism like a way to prosperity, opulence and peace while it's turning their countries to poorness,captivity and war, selling out their working forces like slaves to the banks (in fact, we already work over 1 hour per day as slaves to pay the usurious interest of the banks because of our corrupt politicians who keep on amassing debts because they don't want to touch the upper classes' money) and use their military in foreign countries to "play around", invading,killing,destroying just for fun in the disguise of "anti-terrorism operation" or "peace mission".

Which is also why the stories seems extreme - pretty much like they feel it's the whole world.. like my country's history..

Japan is East Asian tho =) East Asia are the latest to open borders (Japan, South Korea, North Korea - still in it) Mongol/China too, although China is 1/6th the world population so their stories wouldn't be too far off from 'the whole world' >.>

Southeast Asia.. well.. got invaded before we can talk about open borders =)
