For all it's worth, the author mentions they were arranged originally 2 volumes, but ended up going for 5. No author would speak straightforwardly about their own cancellation, but the series had a logical conclusion, so I am inclined to believe them.
Also, it's their first work, so I say this is a pretty solid start.
