 Basically in volume 7 of the LN Ikta and Yatori find themselves on opposite sides of the war.  Ikta is part of the rebel army lead by the princess and Yatori leads the army of Igsem.  Her father tells her to kill Ikta which shocks her greatly.  At his point she "steels" her mind by severing all her connections of individuality as Yatori and becomes a mindless blade of Igsem which her family has been raising her for.  Eventually they fight face to face but Ikta sets up snipers so that he can defeat Yatori without killing her since he knows once Igsem blade is defeated it loses its invincibility.  (he was trying to create a checkmate situation without actually following through and taking the king).  Unknown to him though was that the snipers were actually commanded by the "evil mastermind" of the series and they were actually sent to kill him and Yatori at the same time.  Yatori see this and jumps in front of Ikta and absorbs all the bullets.  During her dying breath she reverts from Igsem "steel" Yatori to her actual individual self.  She thanks Ikta for always being there for her and joining the military even though he never wanted to.  She also gives him her swords to use as he wishes.  Also Yatori wants Ikta to promise that he'll see the princess as a normal girl instead of royalty (probably the wrong person to ask since he's already broken 4 promises.  Not protecting Yatori was his 4th broken promise).  After this Ikta collapsing in depression since all the people he loved has died to war.  The Igsem army withdraws after Yatori defeat and the "evil mastermind" talks to the princess about usurping the thrown from the empire.  At first the princess rebukes him but then he tells her that "isn't this what you wanted? Ikta alive and Yatori dead?".  When he says this dark feelings arise in her and she agrees with his plans for her to become the next emperor.  Later in the night she visits the emperor's bedchamber and kills the emperor with the knife.  She is then appointed as the next emperor and becomes a ruthless tyrant.  In volume 8 the scene shifts to two years after the princess took power.  It tells about how the princess now emperor easily quells any rebellions and will not take even the slightest insubordination from those under her command.  Also she is keeping Ikta all to herself for the past two years and refuses for anyone else to ever see him.  Later in the volume she visits Ikta who has been a vacant shell of himself for the past two years.  She laments that Ikta only had eyes for Yatori and not her while trying to justify her actions by saying she had low political standing and was very young so this was the only way for her to get in power quickly and "fix" the nation.  The only ray of hope for Yatori fans is that Ikta ordered for her to be encased in ice by the spirits so I guess there is chance for her to be revived by some supernatural occurrence.  This story has spirits and stuff so I don't think it quite out of the realm out of possibility.  This is just a condensed summary of what happened if you care to read more head over the auxiliary forums at bakatsuki.

The last page called her "the last princess of the Katjvarna Empire", so I guess abdication and/or exile followed by the establishment of a republic is in order. History has a good share of similar situations.

Now the thing is who will take the helm afterwards, because the princess seems to plan to fake being pro-war, thus she and Solork will "go down" together at the end of all this.

More like out of the blue start losing the war so much that all the politicians in the country has to agree to forfeit the war, but remain strong enough that the victor won't think about rushing over and take over the entire country. At the same time the influence of all the corrupted people who support the war will collapse.

Now the thing is who will take the helm afterwards, because the princess seems to plan to fake being pro-war, thus she and Solork will "go down" together at the end of all this.
Such an interesting twist.

No, no. The plan is making an undefeatable general losing a major/decisive battle. From that, the current army will lose both the morale and influence while they are still big enough. At that moment, the princess will jump out pesuade the king and counsil to end the war by paying compensation or something. With that merit, she will undoubtly become crowned princess and have great influence.

The princess want Solork to lead the army into a planned defeat in a war that she is about to start so that she could use the foreign power to do all the reform's dirty works for her.
After that she would use the well reserved military power to start another war to claim back  her country independence, clamming herself the tile of the liberator.



Oh and Solork would surely be disposed after he got his job done.

Semi-jokes aside, basically, they need to gut the current political structure *including* the parts outside of direct political control (e.g. the nobility and other established power centers) that the monarchy can't touch normally without causing civil war.

So instead, start a war, lose by enough, but not too much (that's the tricky part), and restructure / start anew.  I'm skeptical of the plan's value though, considering the millions of Japanese and Germans that perished in WWII, not to mention the gargantuan amounts of property damage caused or the opportunity costs involved.

You can always wait until volume 7, which would be around chapter 90 in the manga assuming the pace stay consistent

Hah the manga is starting to prep readers on future events with the last couple of pages. And no I'm not talking about the war!

I have to admit, this I didn't expect.

Japanese media is full of Imperial Nostalgia, the idea that empires have something noble or cool about them. If enemies, they are glorious and efficient. If allies, they are the example to follow, better than those weak, corrupt and stupid democracies!

This is the first time I see: "Nope, our empire is beyond hope. The emperor is a useless jerk, the cabinet is full of corrupt nobles that only seek to protect their privileges, and the military is just a tool to preserve that power at the cost of the whole country. So it's better that we crush that Imperial Nostalgia if we want to have a better future. National pride? Forget it, the welfare of the people is more important than that".
