I wouldn't be surprised if the generalization within the series is the females are felines ( ... go figure...) and the males are canines.

I actually just figured it was a mother's/father's side of the family thing.

I think Mashiro might be a cat, too. Though we've never seen her other form, she tends to get associated with cats a lot (pajamas, underwear, likes climbing up on things, general attitude)
