It's a very common trope in chinese Wuxia (the growing immunity part)

I have to give props to the artist. He/she did an excellent job in adapting the light novel into manga form. I love the build up of maomao tasting the food and the last panel reveal, the facial expressions are excellent.

Actually, there's a lot more detail in the light novel.  Food is not the focus of the novel, but mostly a slice of life + court intrigue focused around Maomao.

In the novel, Maomao was raised by her adopted father, who was a physician in the court.  She had access and experience with all kinds of medicines, and naturally is familiar with poisons.  She's a bit crazy in that she gets her thrills from being poisoned and actually went out of her way to poison herself (by letting a poisonous snake bite her, which is why one of her arms is always bandaged, detail isn't drawn in the manga, or ingesting poisons one way or another).  She isn't "immune" to poison, but she can recognize the smell, taste, and appearance of poison without taking it.  She just sips it a little because she's doing it to get "high".  For any random person who eats poisoned food, they wouldn't know it until the poison takes effect.  Note that Maomao only took a taste and pointed out immediately that it was poisoned.  In the novel, she even wants to finish the poisoned soup, only to have it forcefully taken away from her.

She's funny/cute/crazy and lives on the edge.  Usually it's the people around her that panic whenever something happens to her.

For any random person who eats poisoned food, they wouldn't know it until the poison takes effect.  Note that Maomao only took a taste and pointed out that it was poisoned.
