Well Going by Japanese media just having blond hair labels you a delinquent. Even if it is one the rare cases that blond is their natural color. They will even try make them dye it black. Of course dunno how true this is in rl.

You would think the school be making a bigger fuss that one their female honor roll students is constantly seen hanging around with delinquents. Like they would be contacting her parents and such.

Rather than a delinquent the red haired friend seems more like... a fashionable guy? Like, if this was an American school no one would give this kind of behavior a second glance other than to say "Wow, that kid is really expressing himself" or "Ugh, he's so vain."

Cliched rival thing would take several chapters, sometimes a volume to resolve.

This was more like a case of a girl who easily falls in love being mistaken about the MCs' relationship.

Yeah, I miss the typical shoujo romcoms where a misunderstanding and rival arc lasts two volumes.

It's not the word "special" that bothers me, though. It's unlikely to be an issue of phrasing.

It's the fact that his baseline treatment of girls he liked was apparently to share them with his friends like literal toys, and he doesn't seem to have actually changed his mind about doing that. He's just found a girl he thinks of more highly than he does others. It isn't actually going to be a problem, because we can be sure that (in this sort of cute and fluffy slice-of-life story) he won't stop thinking so highly of her, and we don't have to worry about what happens if he starts treating her like any other girl.

The thing is, though, when we've spent thirteen chapters under the impression that Wakatsuki and his friends are fundamentally good kids that rebel in flashy but harmless ways, and then suddenly run into an extra chapter that suggests that Wakatsuki and his friends are actually legitimately dangerous to get involved with and the people concerned for Megumi's wellbeing are completely right and have good reason to worry about her... I tend to lose a lot of confidence in what the author considers to be cute and fluffy, you know?

Again, it doesn't mean anything for the actual story as written, but it still makes me uncomfortable because I'm not good at compartmentalising my imagination by genre like that. I tend to be overly sensitive to stuff like weird tonal shifts and unfortunate implications, so I end up commenting about stuff like this even when I know it's not supposed to be that big a deal.

Well said.  This part really bothered me too.  It was so random and inappropriate.  How can anyone act like this sort of behavior is OK under any circumstances?
